    X99 build suggestions

The time has finally come for me to upgrade my 1st gen I7 setup, the mobo is showing initial signs of going tits up as the southbridge temp sensors going belly up. That and its age so it's time to rebuild.

As this is all water cooled I am running 4ghz.

I also require dual 16x PCIe and it seems the x/z97 setups do not allow this.

Due to the above I have sniffed over the X99 setups coming along coupled with a i7 5930 to allow all 40 pcie lanes.

Initially I will be running my pair of GTX480's but intend to swap those out to the GTX970/980 in the new year (2 in SLI)

so the question remains, what motherboard and RAM to go with the 5930?

I have a huge corsair 800D to shove it in, 3 sata3 SSD's and 2 platter drives, dual water cooling loops so the CPU is going to be cooled by a 120.3 rad with the goal i achieved before of having a very quiet PC even under full gaming loads and near silent on idle.

Oh and an Enermax Revolution 1250W PSU that I hope has a few years left in it.

CPU, mobo and RAM (16gb) budgets £1000.

    Thanks for any suggestions

    Re: X99 build suggestions

I hate to be that guy, but what makes you think you need 32 PCie lanes? If its gaming you absolutely dont. There may be a very few compute cases where its neccessary, but otherwise, unless you end up want tri/quad sli/xfire X99 is massive overkill for gaming. Similarly for 6/8 however many cores over 4/4.

I can happily play even the most demanding games at over 4k (using DSR) with a 4790 and 2 970s.

That being said, if you want to spend the money, my gut would be the higher end MSI XPower board, based only the experience I've had with my current MPower and a friends z87 Xpower - and I hate red & black boards. You might also want to consider card spacing, I think most of the X99 boards will force you to dual slot, if you r existing board is triple it might mean new SLI links etc.

    Re: X99 build suggestions

Agree with herulach, you don't need 16 lanes for each GTX 980.

Even with just 4 lanes you barely lose any performance.

    Re: X99 build suggestions

looks like 2 card sli is it with this series then considering I have an asus phoebus to go in as well!

no gains going with 40 lane over the lower spec cpu then ?

    Re: X99 build suggestions

If you're doing stuff that's likely to benefit from that level of raw performance over lots of threads then the e class procs are worth it, same if you want quad sli. If you are gaming with dual gpus then it's just a waste of money.

Considering your 1000 would get you a 4790 with sli 970s today unless you've got mega bucks I can't see the benefit.

    Re: X99 build suggestions

    Asus X99-A £188
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Lga201...rds=asus+x99-a

RAM is overpriced for the speed at the moment - if you have to buy now then something like:
    G Skill Ripjaws 4 F4-2666 - £192
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ripjaws-F4-2...&keywords=DDR4

Which leaves you plenty for the 5930 at around £450.

    Re: X99 build suggestions

I agree with previous posters, going Haswell-E for gaming isn't really worth it. But if you're set on going down that route, this bundle seems like decent value...

I would have plonked in a secondhand Core i7 980X and would have been done with it.

Honestly I probably would have not upgraded now - DDR4 pricing is mental TBH,and we probably will have 20NM/16NM cards by the end of next year,or early 2016.

    Edit!!

NVM - it appears your mb was going.

Have you seen the prices?! I was hoping to do that one day, but they cost more than many new processors!
