Buying Windows 8 now seems dumb, with 10 just around the corner.
Downside is the gaps. The big one is all the Intel chipset stuff is missing - so even if the MSI overclocking tool didn't crash on startup on 10, it wouldn't work anyway as the Intel Management Engine stuff has no 10 driver
Also, hilariously, Linux supports the Killer E2205 out of the box, Windows 10 does not.
Windows 10 is scheduled to be free to win7 and MS Windows 8 users (licensed or not!?!) for at least a few months after it's release. So you may wish to install with a spare win7 OEM key for a while, until Win10 release (not long as I've been reading...

I'm not doing the upgrade dance willingly.
Let's go through the "updating my old PC" dance:
Insert Vista DVD.
Boot.
Wipe drive.
Install.
Insert Windows 8 DVD.
Boot.
Wipe drive.
Install.
Run Windows update & reboot, 3 or 4 times.
Run the Windows 8.1 update from the Marketplace
Run Windows update & reboot, 5 or 6 times.
Nope. I can make do with the 10 tech preview until July.
