    help withnew build please.

    Currently have
    asus m4a88t -v evo and phenom 11 550be x 2 (which wont unlock).
4 gb Ram corsair ddr3 xms

looking to upgrade as find system is becoming very slow - browsing streaming and office applications
thought that I could just upgrade cpu to fx series amd chip but board not compatible- so happy to go down intel route.
dont want to spend a fortune but happy to future proof (skylark?)

That system should not be slow for those tasks. My money would be on there being lots of background tasks - possibly stuff you've downloaded/installed without realising they run in the background - that are chewing all your resources. Also, I imagine you're on a standard hard drive? If so do you regularly use disk clean-up and defragmenter? A fragmented hard-drive - partiuclarly if the pagefile has become defragmented - will kill system performance.

if your main concern is to improve performance, I'd start by cleaning up your old system as much as possible before spending money on new kit. If you still want to upgrade after a clean up, consider second hand Phenom II processors: there's a whole range of X4 and X6 processors out there that you could consider...

Probably something running in the background. One of my desktops is a 2GHz Athlon dual core with 2GB of RAM and that's fine for general office/browsing. I keep that very clean and don't install extra programs on it because it's mostly for audio work. What anti-virus are you using?

Easiest way to see if something is consuming a lot of resource is to check the performance and details tabs in task manager.

    Re: help withnew build please.

I would get rid of McAfee and put on 360 total security also, what percentage of the CPU is linked to the anti-virus tasks? (like main program running, browser scanner running, etc)?

If you would like to speed up your experience, nothing is better than a SSD. 120GB around £25 and 240GB around £40-45 these days.

If by any chance you thinking about upgrade, just for reference Athlon II X4 CPUs start from £30, Phenom II x3 from £17 and Phenom II x4 from £30 again (all Buy It Now, so potentially an auction could be cheaper).
