    Retiring the 5ghz 2700k for Ryzen 3900

Hi folks, long time Hexus member that's been on something of a technology hiatus while life got in the way

I've been using my faithful 2700k overclocked to 5ghz for seemingly forever, and tbh I'm thoroughly impressed with how well it's held up over the years - both in performance and stability - it's never missed a beat!
However I'm now in a position where it's (A) starting to finally show it's age and (B) I can actually afford to replace it... So it's upgrade time

After a lot of reading I thought I'd settled on a 3800x but then got an amazing deal on an 3900 (non X, OEM only) chip from someone upgrading a prebuilt system to a 3950x

So I've got a 3900 sat currently looking for a home, and tbh I'm bewildered by the number of chipsets, boards and pricing.

My current system is the 2700k, an Asus ROG Maximus motherboard, 16gb dd3 and a gtx1080

I'll be reusing in the new rig the graphics card, my existing HDDs/ssd's and my PSU (a Corsair ax860). So I'm going to need a cooler, motherboard and ram

And I don't know where to start. Previously tbh I'd have immediately picked up an Asus ROG motherboard out of habit, but holy moly things have gone up in price!
I'm leaning towards an Asus x570 Strix-F or E, as I want to be able to drop in a pcie4 nvme in the future, and possibly a top of the range 4000 series Ryzen waaaaay down the line when AM4 dies off and people start selling them cheap.
What I want is a board that can handle a high core count, and that can potentially overclock the 3900 back up to 3900x levels - which should be possible from reviews.

Tbh talk of VRMs and other stuff has got me a little lost.

Coolers, air has always been my preference - but I've absolutely no idea what's decent these days, or can handle the load of 12 overclocked cores

Ram - absolutely lost. No brand loyalty, don't know where to start. Ddr4 obviously, no idea what Ryzen needs, if I should be going for CAS level or speed. Ideally 32gb of whatever it is

System will be used for 3d modelling, a lot of PowerBI dataset work, and moderate gaming

    Budget (approx)
    Mobo - £300?
    Cooler - £100
    Ram - £150-200

    Advice gratefully received!

Re: Retiring the 5ghz 2700k for Ryzen 3900

If you can wait another 6 months or so,maybe get one of the new Zen3 CPUs?

If you can't,and want to get Zen2,I will give you a few points:
1.)The Ryzen 9 3900/3900X don't overclock that much,so you don't need massive cooling. The Zen2 CPUs don't consume as much power as the Intel ones. TBF,even the stock cooling is good enough for the most part.
2.)Manual overclocking is pointless,so just use PBO.
3.)Expensive motherboards really don't do much. The best high end motherboard in terms would be the MSI MAG Tomahawk X570 for around £210.
4.)RAM - 3600MHZ Micron E-die kits or Samsung B-die kits are the ones worth considering

B550 boards are launching on 16 June, so I'd wait for them. The MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk might be worth a look, also Gigabyte's B550 Aorus Master

Comparing default XMP settings, vs manual tuning:
