My son is coming of age.

I'm thinking of passing on my built in hurry and tight budget core system to him.

    R5 3600
    Asrock b450m pro4
    16gb 3200 ddr4 (CL18)
    fractal r5 (OG 1st gen)
(£150gbp second hand value I guess)

    anyway, I'm keeping my 3070
I kind of want to build my AM4 rig properly now but still not with a bottomless budget.

    Thermaltake Core V21
    16gb Corsair ddr4 3600 (CL14)
    R5 5600
    MSI mag b550m mortar
(I need alot of sata ports)

    £500 gbp

Not ragging the Overclock but I'd like an aircooler that can keep quiet under gaming load. £60 on a noctua?

Its almost a side grade I realise that but are the new components a mistep?

I'm a dad gamer now so RGB and case bling is blah blah blah.

Planning on building in the next few months

(still a bit soon for a GPU but are the prev gen options for 30-45 fps minecraft at 1080p?)

Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo, solid cooler. As for the case, you can do better, get the Fractal Design Define Mini C if you want a plain black box, superb build quality with excellent airflow, and stick some Arctic P14 / P12 fans in the front, or if you want something even cheaper that still has excellent build quality and decent airflow, the Thermaltake Versa H18 is a solid case for £40 (high quality chassis)

    Fractal Design Define Mini C:

    Thermaltake Versa H18:

Both are mATX, to suit the MSI MAG B550M Mortar.

It varies a bit based on what you're doing, but unless he's desperate to do ray traced minecraft (no-one does) then a 1650 will get about 200fps which should keep up with most monitors.

Not a massive upgrade apart from the CPU? Is it the SATA ports that are requiring you to go B550?

My son's 980 Ti with a 10100F runs Minecraft (shader/settings dependent of course) faster than that so you're all good.

If it's ports on a budget you're after, look at the ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VI HERO, it has 14 USB on the rear I.O, and 8x SATA ports

Probably *the* highest end X370 board, with tons of bells and whistles, and it now supports all 5th gen processors.

SATA ports is the only pressing need for me. (digital hoarder) Happy with everything else but that's mostly down to the good luck story I had with the 3070.

My rig started as a Q6600 dual 9600GT rig many years ago.
Its evolved (3 processors and 7 GPUs later...) but this latest core upgrade was in reaction to impending EUexit and getting twitchy. I hadn't saved enough so every core component was a compromise.
Excuse to get the rig I'd planned now that everything is calming down.

I could get the boy some 2nd hand ivybridge box or I could give him the guts of mine that should allow him to grow into it.

I'm liking the horizontal mobo thing. Obv I'm a fan of Fractal. Same case for almost 10 years.
