    No soft boot

Hi guys..I had my psu replaced today and the 3xs guy left about 30 mins ago, everything seems great now but i've noticed when I restart the psu actually shuts right off and then turns itself back on...I dont know if this is a feature of this particular psu as it is a more modern version of my old one but my old one used to just softboot where as this one seems to do a cold reboot....is this supposed to happen?

    thx in advance

    Hi

If you are starting from cold some of the newer boards do this and it is quite common

Please let us know if the issue gets any worse or if you need any further help

    Regards

    Re: No soft boot

Hi, Ben thx for the quick response, what I mean is if I am in windows and I click 'Restart'' the computer shuts down completely and turns the power completely off then a second or 2 after it starts up again or so I thought....I now realise that it isnt when I restart from within windows but instead its when I make changes in the BIOS, when it reboots after saving the changes it shuts completely down and turns the power right off..then boots back up after a second...Im not sure if it did this with my old psu or not maybe someone could tell me if this is normal after a making changes in the BIOS.

    Thanks in advance

    Re: No soft boot

It was brought in a few years ago to help solve the 'bad BIOS settings mean no boot' problem that could sometimes happen. It effectively helps by not committing the settings to the CMOS fully (I believe it just stores them in the RAM temporally), but tries to boot using them first, and if a successful POST happens, it will commit them.

You'll notice it if you try to enter bad settings (like overclocking too much), at which point it will power off, reboot, the fans will spin up full, you won't get a POST, the system will shutdown again as if it has been powered off, it will then power up again using the old settings that have not been over written because it didn't POST successfully.

For the most part, having to clear the CMOS by taking the battery out or switching the jumper / switch is a thing of the past now

    Re: No soft boot

    Hi

Yes thanks for the detailed description guys it is working as it should I have the same on my Evga X58 board and all the new boards we work on in 3XS repairs do the same , I have seen some boards cycle 2 or 3 times before now as well, just keep your eye out for the Overclock dropping and if it does this load the 2nd Profile in the bios

Remember as well no power saving on the OC profile we have had a lot of issues with this lately from customers using Screensavers,Sleep and Hibernation, even had a system at Scan that produced a nice blue screen of death every 10 mins...it was the slideshow desktop turned that off and it was 100% stable

    Regards

    Ben

    Re: No soft boot

Im saving the overclock profile for the release of Battlefield 3 ..I dont think I can afford to run my pc full on without any power saving features all the time....Anyway now the psu has been changed and working as it should I'd just like to say thx Scan I'm really pleased with my first 3xs system and also really pleased with the overall experience.
