Fan stopped - overheating followed by poor system performance

Hello all, hope all is going well.

For the past week I've been working on my computer nonstop for a project. I've been editing and compositing raw 5K resolution footage. My workflow has been basically working during the day, rendering overnight, restarting the computer, and working again.

As you can imagine, my PC has been under a lot of 'stress' - but the reason I got this powerhorse of a machine was for projects like that.

Anyway, last night I was going to leave a batch of renders going when one of my fans stopped working (one of two at the top, above some heat sinks I believe). At first I thought that there wouldn't be a problem, given the surplus of fans as well as the liquid cooling - but I noticed that the top of the case (around where the stopped fan) was indeed getting hot.
Shortly after the PC started making noises - couldn't tell if it was the sound of the liquid cooling or some sort of ticking on my HDD. This was highly worrying so I shut the computer down, and let it cool by both powering it off and opening the case. I did notice that the hoses for the liquid cooling were really hot, I don't know if this was normal or not but I feel giving you more info is better.

I decided to stop working for the night, better not risk damaging any hardware - but I needed to transfer my working files so I could render on another computer. I booted up again, and the system took about 3 times as long as it usually does. The weird sound (kind of like clicking, just like before) came back instantly.
As I was transferring my files to an external HDD, the transfer times were slower than usual as well.

    What should I do?
The way that I see/experienced the sequence of events was: one fan stops working, the computer starts to overheat, sounds ensue. Then the system slows down significantly in performance, and the PC doesn't show any changes after shutting down and cooling off for a while.

Clicking sounds like a failed water pump. Can you run RealTemp or similar to tell us what temps you're actually getting at idle and load ?

Will do - I'm at work at the moment but will be going back in a couple of hours to run this test.
Any other tests I should do to cover other areas that might be problematic?

Let's see the temps first. But is the system under warranty still still ? If so, you need to be on the blower to 3XS or raise an OLQ on the website.

Re: Fan stopped - overheating followed by poor system performance

I believe the system should be - I purchased the system January this year, however did not get the Extended Warranty.

Will post results later in the day.

Definitely under warranty. Call 3XS first.

    Hi FredHuergo

Can you email pictures of the top fans to systemsupport@scan.co.uk I have replied through our query system to your email but need to confirm if the Antec Kuhler fans are the ones on top as you have an SR2 Workstation and an Antec Kuhler on each CPU

    Regards

    Ben

Hey Ben, apologies for the delayed reply (I tried replying to the email but it bounced back).

I will take the pictures and post tomorrow.

    Many thanks!
