Question High Idle Temps/High Gaming Temps

I am a bit worried about my system, I was playing AVP on this evening and had an over heating issue with my GFX card.

My ASUS Smart Doctor software booted me out off the game to to tell me that my card was running over 85c, in facet it was running closer to 100c.

now i'm a bit worried and decided to turn my PC off for an hour and the see what mu idle temps were and this is what I found:

Now after a bit of research I have found out that my tepms are a bit above what they should be by 15-20c or so. Should I be worried about this or is this the norm for 3XS Systems?

Just a bit worrying when your high performance Gaming PC has trouble playing a game that is now 2 and half years old.

Cheers for any help in advance,

    Kieran.

Re: High Idle Temps/High Gaming Temps

I have a Corsair H60 with an Exhaust Fan behind the radiator and an extra Exhaust Fan in the top of the case.

All drivers up to date. BIOS Same settings as Scan set up for me apart from my RAID0 setup. I have saved this in another preset so I can go back to the Scan defaults if needed. Obviously would need the RAID setting changed to boot though.

Re: High Idle Temps/High Gaming Temps

Have you tried re seating the cpu. might be as simple as that.

i would expect your idle temps to be alot lower than that. However, this depends on any OC you have on it.

What type of case do you have and the type of fans you have?

Maybe the addition of more fans or better quality ones in the case may improve air flow as well.

What are your room temps as well?

Re: High Idle Temps/High Gaming Temps

Don't forget that this system was built by Scan and has had extra good quality fans added to it. The only thing I have added to it is 2 SSD's for a RAID0 setup.

I don't really want to start dismantling my PC without Scans say so in case I invalidate my warranty with Scan.

In the 6 months I have had it its been fine, just really strange how now its over heating when playing a 2 and a half year old game? I haven't played any more games since as I don't want to damage any of my Hardware.

Also when running Prime95 for 3-4mins the processor temp went above 90c and i'm sure that's not right.

Re: High Idle Temps/High Gaming Temps

    Hi Kieran

The system has a 4.7 Gig Overclock and the temperatures are fine at idle
Under load the system can get to over 90 degrees if using Prime 95 to 100% max the cores out
Under general gaming the CPU temperatures shouldnt reach this temperature,if they are then we may need to look at the overclock

    Regards

    Ben

Re: High Idle Temps/High Gaming Temps

I will test it again tonight and come back to you tomorrow morning with what I found. I just got a little worried when the ASUS System Doctor booted me out of the game due to my GPU hitting 90c.

I will of course provide screen shots of the temps whilst running the game in question.

Re: High Idle Temps/High Gaming Temps

Looks like the advice has been towards the cpu temprature, when you are really asking about the GPU temprature. My mistake there.

In regards to the system, what one do you have and what GPU are you using?

what is your CPU idle temps sitting at. Be interesting to see what they are for a 4.7GHZ overclock?

Re: High Idle Temps/High Gaming Temps

I am running an ASUS 1gig GTX 560 Ti TOP.

I was playing AvP again last night for an hour or so and left Hardware monitor running in the background whilst playing. Here is a screenshot of my temps current and min max:

Strange as now all my tepms look fine. I understand that the higher idle temps are due to the Overclock but is 50c really ok for idle? is there anyway I can get this down at all? I was under the understanding that running a water cooled CPU cooler (Corsair H60) would keep my CPU cooler than the standard fan?

Thanks again for all your help thus far!

I am a AMD guy so as for idle temps in Intel I have no idea.

My phenom 965 idles at 32deg and Max on 50deg with a 3.8OC with air cooling. If my CPU hits 55deg I begin to worry.

I do believe however that intels can go higher. If the guy from scan says your idle temps are good I would tend to believe him. If your rig has a air cooler, I can imagine your idle would be around 10 deg higher.

I bet if your clock was at stock speeds, your idle would be a low as 30 or 40deg.

As for the GPU. I am not sure that your temps are looking to bad. Is that OCed as well.

I can also ask if your rig is in a cool room or not? If the room is warm, the rigs temps will be higher too.

    Hi Kieran

Can you please confirm that the VGA card and all fans are clean and free from dust and what the room temperature is?

Also have you tried any other games to see if the issue is across the board with all games?

Re: High Idle Temps/High Gaming Temps

    Hi Ben,

I have checked all fans in the system including the 2 on the 560Ti and all seem to be working fine except one of the system fans. the one connected to the Sys_2 fan port on the board is it? this other fan is running at about 1/4 the speed the other 2 are and I can see that by the RPM in the bios.

The one behind my Radiator is spinning really fast and the one in the front of the case is spinning fast but this other one is not.

I have moved this fan to the front of my case anyway so I now have 2 intakes at the front and one exhaust at the back, to get better air flow running though my case.

I will try another game this afternoon and see what happens. I was playing AvP again this morning and my Processor got up in to the high 60c's and my GPU was sitting at 80c.

    Kieran.
