Question Widescreen Monitor with older games???

This is my first post to the forum - I have just ordered a 3XS system and am eagerly awaiting build!

But a thought crossed my mind as I tried to shower some life into myself on a wet Lancashire Monday morning...

As nearly all the larger flatscreen monitors are now widescreen, I chose a 24" widescreen monitor to accompany my new system (replacing a huge 19" CRT monitor) - but I find myself wondering how this will display older games that were written before widescreen displays were the norm? Being a bit of a simulation freak, the games I currently run most are:

    1) MS flight sim 9 (Century of Flight)
    2) MS Train Sim
    3) GT Legends by Simbin
    4) Richard Burns Rally (Sci/Warthog)

Whilst I know MSFS can be run in a window, I am wondering how the other games (which run fullscreen) will look - I do not want them to look "short and fat" like some things do when viewed on widescreen tellys! Can widescreen monitors by switched to work like older non-widescreen monitors?

Any advice would be very gratefully received, as I might have to get in touch and change my choice of monitor for something less fancy.

    Neil Porter.

Re: Widescreen Monitor with older games???

I would recommend visiting the Widescreen Gaming Forum - it's got loads of advice on how to make various games work properly in widescreen.

The solutions vary between games, but some don't have proper support and will just produce short and fat pictures.

Re: Widescreen Monitor with older games???

Thanks for the tip - having had a look at the forum you suggest, I have decided that I am best to avoid widesreen at this time, and have contacted Scan to amend my order to a simple 19" 4:3 monitor (hoping this is possible at this stage).

I can always upgrade to a bigger WS monitor at a later stage, when I have replaced the older games with their newer versions!
