WD AAKS Vs YS (RE) Drives

    hellooo all

anyone knows the main differences between those two drives:

    Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 3200AAKS

    &

Western Digital Caviar RE 320GB 3200YS

    any performance difference?

    thanks

I *think* the RE stands for RAID edition. The RE is I think a slightly more expensive server hard drive that is meant to be optimised for RAID and also has support for NCQ (pretty useless for most home users).

    RE IS BUSINESS DRIVE.

it has old style molex power plug and is slightly slower than AAKS

i got two of these (one of each) deliberately to find out.

i wanted a data drive and so kept enterprise RE drive and sold aaks.

if i was using it for main boot drive i'd have kept aaks, though i hate the new sata power lead connectors.

re has 5 yr warranty. aaks has 3

I'm using two WD1600YS RE in raid0 for my windows operating system and they're very speedy. In benchmark terms I don't know how they compare but who notices 0.5 of a second anyway?

I notice in your benchmarks Zak you haven't compared them in raid, though my system is different specs so I don't think it would be a fair test, I might do some benchmarks on my array and put the results up. TBF the main advantage of raid0 is when I'm copying a couple hundred gigs of data it cuts the time down a lot.

I couldn't chap..only had one of each! I paid for them with my own money, it wasn't a HEXUS initiative, so wasn't funded.

However...I'm very glad I did it because I've been able to help a lot of people since doing it AND it's real life experience, not a review from someone I dont know, or hearsay.

My dislike of the new SATA power lead made me keep the slightly slower drive. I'd happily but either drive though now. Having used them I found then quiet enough, and fast.

is like i said on ur other thread there is not huge difference tbh in performance from the results, i dont know if there are other chrateristics with the newer aaks i.e vibration and seek noises which could be better maybe.

can you do a pros and cons of them each if you can

    thanks
