    Ati 3870

Wanted to but a new graphics card and was going to buy an 8800GTS but read an article on ATI's new range. Are these new ATI 3870 cards as good as the 8800GTS cards? Is there any benchmarks for them yet?

    Cheers in Advance

    Re: Ati 3870

on paper the 3870 should be better than a 8800GT but it's way behind. Is this due to the drivers or am I missing something?

Partly driver and partly nVidia sleeping with every games producer so they code/programme to suit nVidia driver architecture.

That said, the ATI/AMD hotfix actually boosts tee 3870's performance some 30-40% in Crysis where it now slaps the 8800GT all over the place - stock for stock.

    Re: Ati 3870

There's a long post on *spit* OcUK in the graphics card section, a number of people applied the patch and saw huge boosts allowing them to either jump from medium to max settings or raise the resolution considerably.

Because of this and going on ATIs history with drivers, I can only see them improving performance with releases over time - on the flip side nVidia are currently struggling to improve their drive set.
    The situation's looking...

    Re: Ati 3870

I used to be an ATI fanboy but after my x1950 died due to a design flaw and I couldn't get it replaced because it had not failed due to an error but simply because it could not tolerate the heat it produced (sapphire who made the card simply said you needed a ridiculously powerful PSU, like the enermax infinity ones I think). I tried a DIY fix (zalman ramsinks) but unfortunately no luck. So got an 8800gts.

If it had not messed up I'd be buying this card right now, but from an 8800gts it's no reason for an upgrade unfortunately. I'm a bit gutted though, I would have saved myself a fair bit of dough!

Any chance of a link Bleek? I'm having trouble finding the thread on the OCUK forums...
