    new pc but maybe changes?

    Right

i have 2 gig of cheapish ram -

    2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12

would i benefit from another 2 gig in anyway seeing as its only peanuts to buy! - going in an asus delux board

i also have an amd2 6000+ with an artic cooler but the cooler seems loud , what heatsinks are quiet and get rid of hear verywell! , i'll probaly also get a batter case after x - mas aswell as i am useing something cheapo for now.

graphics - xfx 8500gt from what ive seem reviews on it seems a very low end budget card - the only game i play really is quake 3 but will be useing my pc to watch films on - 8800gt? little excesive for quake?

would i be best of getting a better case with good cooling . water cooling? and over clock a tad?

What resolution do you play at? If its only 1280x1024 then I would stick with 8500gt if it works.

Get the ram its worth it

Re: new pc but maybe changes?

If you are only going to play quake 3, watch movies, use the internet, etc. you may as well save yourself the money as you won't really benefit much from 4GB. You would only benefit from more than 2GB if you are playing the latest games or running some memory intensive applications such as 3D rendering.

The 8500GT will be fine for quake 3 and movies.

btw - Quake 3 is awesome, haven't played for years, I'm tempted to install it now.

Re: new pc but maybe changes?

For about the same price for the 8500GT this 7600GT is much better.
Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

and no your not really going to benefit from another 2GB of RAM.

Re: new pc but maybe changes?

I agree with LegacyOne, get the 7600GT over the 8500GT unless you specifically need directx10, which you probably won't as your not playing the latest games (they would run like s**t on the 8500GT).
A better graphics card will allow your games to run faster and if you are using Windows Vista you will be able to use all the Windows Aero features. The 7600GT will perform well for Aero and Quake 3.

Read this if you want to know about Aero in Wndows Vista:

Re: new pc but maybe changes?

While memory is cheap is madness not to get as much as a machine will take.

I paid £170 for 2x1gb Platinum in March

I can now get the same for £35

Re: new pc but maybe changes?

Wow, I'm suprised it doesn't run quake 3 very well, my old geforce 3 would run it at 1280x1024 with everything on full.
An 8800GT will be very nice, I plan on getting one in January.

Re: new pc but maybe changes?

    get more ram.

You can use it in your next rig too...a quad core for example.

    4 gig is good

I recently got my girlfriend the AMD HD2600Pro which runs all her games really nicely and only uses a tiny bit of pwoer. Mind you I own had 270w to play with. But that was £50, and will beat the 8500gt. Edit: but not the 7600GT. Still for a low power solution it does run games pretty well at 1440 x 900

Oh dear, apologies! If you look at the 3dmark scores they're almost identical, but I think it's because some games are optimised for Nvidia...
