OMG I can't believe this... well at least its working.

And as for my first machine it only cost £700 all together and the rig I currently have was just over £800 so as far as money spent on a system your up there with the crazies

I had an Asus motherboard and it did the same, sent it back and it was faulty. Then the replacement failed 2 months down the line so I sold it and purchased Gigabyte... 5 months on and its still working 100% and one hell of an overclocker as well. I'd recommend other brand names to Asus as myself and friends have all had bad experience with them. Gigabyte, MSI and Abit are all better alternatives imo.
Never just send a motherboard back because it wont post thats why about 75% of NFF charges are moaned about on here.

I knew it would be something simple like booting with less memory or as in SANDYGWS case no heatsink

People seem to have problems with a motherboard then suddenly they are a bad board and you must stear away from them. Reliabity can only be measured when a number of boards are looked at and compared with thte RMA rate. A motherboard brand is not bad because 1 customer has had a previous fault with them this is not a fair comparison.

Thank you SANDYGWS for your comments glad your build is working now and as always let me know if you require anymore help.

    Regards

I am not the only customer who has had faults with Asus... as I said myself and friends(meaning more than one) have had numerous faults between us.

Thing is I find I am rather unlucky. Big companies like Asus do have a great deal of good quality boards but because of there shear volume some bad ones have to get through. Again because of there shear volume there are more of these bad/faulty boards going around which puts the odds that I'll get a faulty one much higher than what it would be from smaller companies like Abit, Gigabyte or MSI. Its all about the maths and to keep myself as safe as possible I choose the route which has the least probability to disappoint.

I stay away from really big volume suppliers like Asus and Samsung for this very issue. They may have loads of good products but I always seem to find the bad ones in circulation.

Never said Asus were bad they are just a company I avoid due to reasons stated above.

I agree I was too quick to fault the motherboard should of asked a few questions first but first impressions of sandy was that he was a diligent guy so I thought he was thorough with his checks. He did seem to try lots of alternatives.

My Asus board seems to be working just fine. After playing around yesterday and leaving it running overnight, it's 100% stable at over 4GHz! with respectable temps too

Looks like the initial "overcooking" did the CPU some good

    Here's the proof:

sandygws, I am looking at getting this exact board and the qx9770 as well...am I to understand that you were able to just plug it all in and it worked with no adjustments to bios, etc.? Let me know as I want to order things soon.

    Thanks.

    tomservo,

To run the board and processor "out of the box" is not a problem - they are 100% compatible.

To overclock the processor requires a LOT of BIOS tinkering. To overclock the BIOS and achieve 100% stability takes days of tinerking.

Took me a while to finally balance speed with stability, but this is the result:
