    Question Anyone with a 4870??

I'm just wondering as I've heard a few bad things about the cards as they seem to be dying rather quickly out there

Also I hear that with the drivers locking the GPU fan @ 14% it tends to get a bit warm... Are Scan able to offer an aftermarket cooler without infecting the cards warrenty??

Just thought I'd ask before buying

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Anyone with a 4870??

i'm glad you just started this thread, i was planning on getting one this week when they were going to be in stock. searched a few forums and it does seem like a lot of the cards are dying even if the bios hasn't been flashed.....

I'm so glad PC forums exist

Here's a link that if you buy a 4850/70 card, you can higher up that fan speed

    http://chilledpc.co.uk/portal/index....d=52&Itemid=46

    Hope that's of some use

    Re: Anyone with a 4870??

thanks i saw that posted on another forum. but seems like it may be more than just a heat problem. some ppl have got artifacts before the cards have failed, and those ppl think it may be the ram thats the problem. although the heat is quite hot, apparently it can hit the 100s before they'd begin to shut down/break down. if the 4850s haven't been causing any problems, then it means either the gpus in the 4870 are clocked too high or the ram (only thing different between the two) is where the problem lies.

good thing i've been looking for deals on the gtx260, if things aren't looking too good on the ati side at least i know where to order my new gfx card

    I have read it aswell.
By all accounts, it appears to be something to do with the new memory they use.

    Steer clear til its sorted.

Never buy hardware the day it comes out or even the first few weeks. I learnt my lesson with an E8400 and diode errors.

    Re: Anyone with a 4870??

Most deaths seem to be due to ppl flashing their BIOS
Evene though they dont admit ti, and some cards have just started to work suddenly again once the BIOS recovery is working

    Odd stuff lol

    Most....but by far from all.
There is obviously an inherent problem here.

you seem to have a really bad relationship with ati, or is it just me?.... but i totally agree with you on this one, there has to be some sort of problem here. ppl could argue that the number of bios flashing errors has pushed up the numbers. but i'm certainly not going to risk it unless someone could prove to me that the high number of failures are mainly due to ppl messing up the bios and that the cards are actually free from fault hardware wise.
