Are all 2.5" enclosures created equal?

    Hi,
I just bought a couple of these:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=802975

    and a couple of these:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=798910

They arrived today, but the drives are too big for the enclosures. What gives? To be honest at £5 a pop, I'm not sure I can be bothered to return the enclosures, but if the drives are too big to fit in any enclosure they're no use to me at all....

I got the predecessor to the product above to take the HDD out of my laptop which I replaced with a Western Digital 320gb (same physical size as the Hitachi you linked to) and it performs flawlessly

Standard 2.5" drives are 9.5mm thick. Non-standard drives are up to 12.5mm thick. Guess which size your drives are?

I had this problem a year ago when I ordered a 250GB laptop drive from Scan, it would fit in my laptops media bay.

Re: Are all 2.5" enclosures created equal?

@dave87 : From tech specs: • For 2.5" SATA hard disk (up to 9.5mm high).

@funkstar : So what's my options? Do any 2.5" enclosures fit the larger HDDs?

Re: Are all 2.5" enclosures created equal?

Ah sorry mate, I presumed it was the same size in height as the 320gb in the same range.

    That's slightly annoying

Re: Are all 2.5" enclosures created equal?

File a customer support query with Scan, they helped me out last year.

I really wish Scan would flag the height in the product description, this can't be the only instances of this happening.

Or you could have a hunt through the product description for their other cases, pretty sure some of them will handle 12.5mm thick drives.

Yes it would be really helpful to have the 2.5 drive thicknesses listed in the specs, sometimes hard to find even from the manufacturer pages

Re: Are all 2.5" enclosures created equal?

We'll struggle to measure every unit that comes in. If the manufacturer specifies the height of the unit either in the manual or online, we'll add a category for this but otherwise we'll struggle. We can get items out of the warehouse and check them for you, it can just take time. Give it a go though, I'll be at my desk shortly (=

Re: Are all 2.5" enclosures created equal?

I think it's just these Hitachi 500GB that are thicker due to the number of platters or thickness of the platters I don't remember. They should put it in the specs but they would not sell any as they don't fit most laptops!

Re: Are all 2.5" enclosures created equal?

Can someone from Scan come back to me please? Are you able to provide 12mm cases, or do I have to send it all back?
