The fan in question is fine.

All of the pictures you have posted are of AMD64 HSF based on the OLD - ORIGINAL - AMD design. This indeed, as can be seen clearly on all the photos, had/has a small extension on the end of the clip. This was/is used to hold the retention arm down after the HSF is attached. A problem we noticed with this design was the arm could snap when it was removed due to the tension!

The HSF that comes with the XP3500 that you returned to SCAN is of the NEW design. This no longer has the extension on the end of the clip. You will notice inside the HSF there is a cam - this stops the arm from returning once down and also removes the need to have it clipped in place.

However the cradle that sits on the Motherboards is still of the original AMD64 design - I assume this is so it can accomodate AMD retail fans and third party fans - a good example being the Gigabyte in the first picture.

The new AMD retail fans fit this original cradle WITHOUT the need for the little extension - and hence the fault report saying no fault found.

I hope this clears up any confusion on this issue.

    Indeed it does, RVN.

I had an e-mail to the same effect from John @ Scan last night with photos.

This was my first system build - there's no wonder I've been confused, in my opinion, but Scan have been helpful (and right) every step of the way. I do feel a little silly because I did loose my temper with John on the phone at some point!

I'd like to thank everyone at Scan for eventually resolving this issue for me, I'll be contacting you with credit card details for return of the item later today.

The design change should have been noted in the installation instructions, however this is AMD's problem, not Scans. So I have no bad words to say about Scan - It's nice to be able to at least speak to someone on the other end of the phone.
