    Question on customs

    Hi All,

This is my last resort as I did not find anything useful on google, etc.

I'm planning to buy a component on ebay from a chinese seller and in the description it says:

    "International Buyers:
    Please Note:
    a) Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.
    b) Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying. "

Is there a way to estimate these charges and if so, how will I able to pay them?

    the item costs 67 pounds

I have checked the HMRC website but found nothing useful.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Question on customs

If it comes in by the post office expect 5-10 fee + 17.5% of the value. So 16-21 quid is what I would expect. If uits the post office they will put a card through the door and you go an pay for it at the post office, if it ends up with parcel farce you will get a letter and you can pay in person, on the phone, or online.

    Re: Question on customs

It also depends if the seller lies about the cost of the items as a few do and then if your lucky it wont cost you anything.

Royal mail and parcel force charge you a £8 handling fee for paying the vat etc for you.

however if lied, and the item got lost on the way, then its insured up to the value stated

    Re: Question on customs

You pay (if it gets caught) VAT at 17.5% on the combined cost of the goods, shipping, and any additional insurance. On top of this the courier that delivers to your door charges a handling fee, this ranges between £8-£15.

And, in the general case, import duty too, which goes on before VAT is calculated.

But in this case, there should be no import duty, as the consignment is valued at under £135. If the consignment were over £135, then there would still be no duty if the duty at the prevailing rate were under £9. working out the correct rate is a nightmare, since it depends on getting the commodity code correct.

Just for clarity, for anyone not aware of it, import duty and VAT are different things and you will often pay both.
