Darkening the web may save the planet

Today's watercooler chat, if Slashdot is anything to go by, should be about how black web pages can save power. Some reckon that taking the world's most popular sites and painting them black will save megawatts of energy... so we're going to do our bit!

It mentions that you would only really save power on CRT screens, but what about when OLED screens arrive - does anyone know if it would save power with those in years to come?

OLED doesn't need back lighting so that'll offset the power consumption anyway, I reckon.

Why not just turn off your monitor when browsing a non-hexus website

I actually waited on the beta site for 2 mins for it to load! :->
The internet enables communication and we need this to solve the worlds problems.. or atleast have a good chatter about it whilst things get worse!

    This is ridiculous.

CRT monitors consmue more power with white screens but an LCD (which most people have nowadays) consumes more power displaying black. What a waste of time.

So with TFTs without dynamic backlighting, black webpages save nothing, but it's animation that causes the energy draw.

I'm thinking that getting rid of flash animated adverts must be the key to stopping global warming, then!

If they want to save power why not just turn off all those bloody 400w High pressure sodium streetlamps that run for 8-12 hours a day.

It was only a while until someone checked to see if there was any text on this 'beta' page:

You can't see meeeeee!

HEXUS rocks, btw.

in black font on the page!

    lol
