Come on, where's the bang for buck rating? Stonking performance no doubt but is it £600 well spent? How about a test against 2x socket F 2218s with change for a second hand for escort or something?
Why would I want one? There's hardly a huge improvement over Core 2, which is more than fast enough for most of todays stuff, while Nehalem is going to crush this when it comes out next year.
The thing is - all current 65nm chips will switch over to this manufacturing process and the transition will be quick.... so you might not want this top of the line one but imagine the possibilities on the lower end SKUs
Possibilities for what though? Sure, given the choice between two chips at the same price I'll always go for the faster one, so it's nice for people who needed to buy a new chip anyway.. but I can't imagine this would actually change anyone's mind about their planned purchase.

Actually, that's a point. Maybe my existing system will do just fine, and I don't need a new one. I can save myself about £1500.

this is a new low guys! a quad core spanking new intel processor (that is as far as i know not avail in the shops) vs an aging dual core AMD one. Was there any reall point in these benches? and as mentioned before no bang 4 buck ... is that because it would show AMD in a more positive light?
Also whats with the game benches .. the faster AMD procs scring less? is this a well dcumented phenome[non] (sry couldnt resist it).
if i didnt know hexus better i would have said intel payed for this article to be written.
I really expect better from a tech site that i hold in such high regard.
We are all gagging to see/get our hands on the new intel Monster but thats 10 mins of my life i will never get back.
what are you ranting about? Hexus have always compared similar products when testing something. This is no different when they review video cards. We all like to see where the rivals product's stand. Comparing an TOP OF THE LINE and CURRENT AMD CPU is a great way to show how far Intel has come. We all also know AMD's CPU range will be refreshed soon.

Going a bit far I think...
ok maybe i started a bit heavy handed but the comparison had no real purpose. The yorkfield architecture is not even available yet, and comparing it to a dying AMD one seems a bit of a waist of time. and as you said .... phenome is due next month. now that will be interesting/useful to see. just my opinion. you dont have to agree.
Of course we will test release results vs Phenom as soon as we are allowed.... We compared it with the highest performing AMD part which is out at the moment. Top vs Top.
... There is nothing wrong with the testing in this, and the reason that we have not done a Bang4Buck is that we are now allowed to discuss pricing until it becomes publically avaliable in a week or so....

So I could spend ~£600 on that chip or build a Q6600 system for about the same price. I know the one I'd actualy be spending my money on. Still it will be nice when the new 45nm process becomes standard.
The big win (in my opinion) on 45nm is power consumpton. Extra performance is of course nice too, but dropping the power is more interesting to me.
Ok many people don't care too much on this front, but I'm more excited about it as an overclocker.
I've got a pair of G0 Kentsfields (Q6700 and QX6800) and while the QX6800 can stretch to 3.8GHz out of the case with a high airflow air-cooling, in a case it's incredibly difficult to keep it cool.
My system is very quiet, and so in the case I run at just 3.33GHz to get a nice balance between performance and temperatures as I insist on absolute stability (3 weeks uptime and counting at present).
The results show a drop of 40W off at full load compared to the QX6850, and so should give corresponding drops in power consumption at higher clock speeds too. For the overclocker who doesn't want to put up with excessive noise or water-cooling (been there, done that, got fed up of the hassle) it's a great chip.
Naturally many people will want to wait for the non-Extreme version, but from where I'm sitting this is very tempting.

me too, can't wait for a review on the phenom. remember the q6600? it was once £660 something too. This'll be the same...
