    400 quid?

    Crikey.

I'd be tempted - if I had anything (at all) that ran badly right now (1600x1200).

A few years back I used to be really into the latest greatest PC components. I remember splashing out a few hundred quid on a 9800XT when it first launched - boy did that thing get hot and boy was it a waste of money.

Since then, I've totally toned down my PC builds and my current system has a decent core 2 duo, 4GBs of RAM and a bog-standard HD 2600 graphics card.

As for gaming, I found myself ending up on consoles (Xbox 360 at the moment), I just found it easier in the end.

Taking a look at the 9800 GX2 prices, I can't believe how expensive they are. Yep, I know they're the cream of the crop and out perform anything else, console or otherwise. But still, £400 for one component?

Personally, I'd take the £400 and buy an Xbox 360 AND a Nintendo Wii, I'd get about £70 change too.

I disagree with your comments about the 9800. Correct, it was a damn hot single slot card.

But what did nvidia have out at the time to compete? The FX 5800 and 5900, which were both dual slot, crap, and weren't called dustbusters for nothing...

Believe you need ample cooling for this card too.
Always the problem with high end components - get 1 and you need the whole lot.
Costs a fortune in the end.

Re: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 in-stock pricing finally plummets to below £400, co

In my eyes this is like the Windows ME of Graphics cards. We all know it's still all 8800 tech in these new 9 series cards, so why are nvidia ripping us all off and hiking the price up on old tech. I agree that the 8800 series has been a great card.

£400 would get my car loan down a bit, no way would I spend that amount of money one piece of hardware when for £400 you can buy a halfway decent laptop. Price really needs to come down in my mind.
