Having just bought a laptop with a Blu-ray drive I was very excited to try blu-ray out. Having found out the average price of even an old release is >£12 I've gone down the rental route. I can't see myself buying lots of blu-rays unless the prices comes down to the 'a couple of pounds more than the DVD release' point - I expect thats most people are waiting for. Lets face it - who wants to pay a premium for most of the rubbish thats produced.
You forget how much DVDs were when they came out. They will come down eventually. What I hate is going into a shop showing Blu-Ray and their set up is AWFUL. Not really doing it justice. No wonder so many people say DVD is good enough when they see rubbish displays.

Some old Zavvi stores are selling Blu Ray discs cheap. Cars was only £10.00. It looks amazing on my PC. As did Wall-E. I'm buying a lot of Pixar type movies. As I sit back and watch these movies on my PC I feel it was woth every penny. Pixar movies are simply mind blowing. When video games produce visuals that I am seeing in these movies, I will not see how they could make it look even better.
Sin City has been released. I plan on getting that later. So all I'll be buying on Blu Ray are Pixar type movies and arty films like Sin City and Spirit. This is because when I do not feel like watching the movie a second time like nearly all my DVDs I had, I have watched my Blu ray discs repeatedly because it looks so stunning. Wall-e I have watched 3 times, and I only bought it just over a month ago.
My mate got me on to LoveFilm, so when I rent now I try and get the BR if I can.
One very good rental is Appleseed Exmachina, not earth shatteringly good, but it looks amazing.
Blu-ray has many faults and price isn't one of them.
Its too dam slow to replace a good DVD or CD drive. Still upto a minute for a disc to load on
new players. Dvd player fires up in seconds.
Because its software intense it will crash from time to time. My VCR or DVD player never crashed!
They keep updating it with new profiles... Whats that about! DVD players do today what they did 10 years ago.
Now my full HD setup is iminent, I've been looking at BluRays. Zavvi online had a handfull at about £8.50 the other week.
It's weid how back in the day, I would happily pay £15 for a DVD, in fact that was a bargain. I bought the original complete Bond series for 2-for-£30 when they were released. So I really shouldn't grumble so much about BR being the price it is. Yet I do.
I also noticed that HMV stores are starting to get them in from £8, although they are terrible films, so thats not a surprise. It won't be long before the mass special offers start to kick in. I predict the end of summer or the run up to christmas, we'll see things like 2-for-£15 or 3-for-£30, decent titles too.
Recent studies show that there is unlikely to be a push on bluray media. Ondemand services via Virgin media and Microsoft are proving to be the next big thing for films.
I'll just go ahead and corrct myself.
BluRay titles are available from HMV.co.uk from £6.99. A couple of cood films in there, the others are distinctly average and I can't see the point of them being on BluRay it's not like you need to see Sex and the City in HD.
