Why would Intel release a chip that is somewhere inbetween an i7 and a core 2 quad and then create a different socket to run it??

Can't help feeling that Intel have scored a bit of a own goal on this particular one as I would rather spend the extra possibly £60-70 and get an i7 920 rather than this cut down chip.

Because it's a lot faster than a core2 quad while able to be run on a motherboard with almost half the BoM.

Will they be making any mainstream Gulftown's on socket 1156 (like, without HT) or is that just going to be for 1366?
