Re: News - Tablet market to grow to $4 billion by 2014

As much as it pains me to say this, I have to agree with Steve Jobs when he says that tablets are basically in the same market segment as netbooks. I don't think they'll replace netbooks mind: there will always be plenty of people out there who want a keyboard and mouse for their most portable computer.

Of course, a lot of this depends on the size of the tablet in question: We're currently seeing a lot of tablets with 9" - 12" screens, and they will canibalise netbook sales, but there's also been talk about tablets / slates with 5" - 7" screens, which would make sensible alternatives to current smartphones. I'd certainly be interested in replacing my current smartphone with a simple phone and a 5" - 7" tablet with a data plan...

The guy who was been quite nasty n slating you

I just thought my comment might of brought some happiness into a someone's life who obviously needed some.

however I did kinda also report the post, and without it above mine, it makes my comment look odder than one of my normal comments.

He certainly sounds like he needs some love in his life - he's not going to get any that way though...! Well, except from you, apparently

I'm still not sure there's even a significant market for tablets.

I'm actually with you on this steve.

TabletPCs rock for taking notes, doing Maths (Math Input panel -> Latek -> Matlab -> Maple) Drawing things, and that is about it.

The idea of making them simple consumption devices.... I'm just not sure on, an iPod touch is much closer to the £100 mark. These devices are far to expensive in my mind to justify that same kind of whim spending.

The analysist hasn't said anything to aliviate my fears, that this is just another flash in the pan.

Re: News - Tablet market to grow to $4 billion by 2014

A netbook where you can unclip the keyboard would be ideal for me. Most of my netbook use is for watching video, and a tablet would sit better on my knee and be easier to hold. But there are times that I want to use it as a little laptop, like when I actually get wireless access when travelling/offshore.

Basically an Archos 9, but a 10" screen and doesn't suck.

Really, just add a touchscreen to a netbook... costs £50 off the bay.

I'm surprised there aren't more touchscreen netbooks around, nothing apart from the dell 2100@280 and fizzbook @349.

Yes it is, I see your point. I haven't seen what you describe in the wild, but the iPad comes with an optional keyboard dock. However, it's a desktop keyboard.

But I don't want the keyboard attached, it gets in the way when I'm watching films and TV
