CS:S isn't retro! It is still one of the best games out, and one that I keep going back to. The design of the game is just so simple, yet there are so many different ways each round can play out.Is this game just too old to compete with the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield? Do you prefer a bit of retro gaming?
I just hope that in this new beta that they haven't added too many gimmicks
It soooo is!
I like it just because it's so nostalgic, one of the first games I ever played on my first computer back in 2002..
Yeah, hopefully core gameplay remains the same and all the gimmicky stuff doesn't start clogging it up with waiting times and stuff.. That'd annoy the life out of me!
CS:S is one of the 2 games I play, the other being IL2..
Its a great game, the server I play on is full of fun types and thats exactly what a game should be..
Great! May be tempted to dust off my shotgun when I finally get my upgrade done
If you're going to get all pedantic then I'd argue that your idiom is inappropriate for this game.
It's not foreclosed or otherwise resolved for reasons which are self evident - Valve have updated the game this long after release and it could be reasonably argued that they will continue to do so."Flogging a dead horse", (alternatively "beating a dead horse" in some parts of the Anglophone world) is an idiom that means a particular request or line of conversation is already foreclosed or otherwise resolved, and any attempt to continue it is futile; or that to continue in any endeavour (physical, mental etc) is a waste of time as the outcome is already decided.
The large and rather loyal fanbase means that any future updates will be thoroughly tested and reviewed by the CS:S community.
It's quite possible that this update will bring back more players to the game - I know I certainly am more inclined to play the updated CS:S than I was before.
So, not a dead horse, and while it may be 'well flogged', there's plenty of life in it yet.
You're still misunderstanding the idiom, the horse is dead (ridiculously old, already sold to the hilt), there's no more work (fiscal gain) to be had out of it, and flogging (patching) it wont change that. The number of fanboys it has flogging it is irrelevant to how dead this horse is. It's an idiom, a figure of speech.
I think it is still making sales today - it's always on Steam's top sellers (long) list
Edit - woo - this is my 1337 post.

I don't see it as bad, I was making a joke and a bit of a jab at CS in general... Unfortunately, it would seem that impartiality, reading comprehension, and humour are among the first victims to fall in the face of fanaticism. And it gets progressively more ruined as you have to explain it further.
Actually, I'm inclined to think that Valve's motivation for the features patch is to bling it up for an OS X launch, since that'll probably open up some revenue for them, and it isn't a very machine intensive game pretty much any Mac will run it. It's a good a reason as any, I might even dust off the disc and kill a few hours with it when they're done.
