Nice to see the Mini hasn't been forgotten, and I like the internal PSU,
but shouldn't that SD slot be on the front ?
Price as usual is a little more than you'd expect...
Yeah I like the look of it and the power consumption is excellent. However the price does look a little high. I thought the previous generation versions started at a much lower cost?
Yes, the old model was a slightly more reasonable £499
(though the original mac mini was launched at £339, which could truly be called a "cheap mac").
Of course, aesthetics over fiddling around the back of the Mini to plug in a USB stick or SD Card.
Who would use the SD Card reader when its at the back?
Bugger me, it's nice looking..
But also, bugger me, that is too much money.
Yeah, it's mindblowing isn't it. My work bought me an iMac and it winds me up no-end fiddling around at the back trying to plug in a USB flash drive, etc. So, in the end I just got an extender cable. This looks way more naff than a front USB port, but it's my fault it looks naff, not Apple's.
$699 + sales tax so in reality (using UK tax) it's about $820..so not that much of a rip off.
Too expensive for me though - this is an ideal mac mini but it should be at £400 to make it cost effective imo
Does look very good though and I think this completes the conversion to unibody across the range now?
err by your logic spud, it would be about £550........
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)
so not massively overpriced compared to the USA, with the higher cost of business in the UK.
My point was that it's not a straight 699 to 649 swap..tax does make a big difference to the tune of £120 or so; it would be much worse if that wasn't the case.
Sales tax doesnt apply if you buy in US and have the retailer ship to UK but then you get VAT and Customs as well.
New York Sales taxes total 8.875% or $62 so still worth a friend buying in New York if visiting but not worth a trip specially!
BTW, product page says 100-240V for the Power which implies an auto switching PSU. So buy in USA guys!
So in New York the Mac Mini will cost $761 which is around £517.
I'm not sure about it's dimensions. It looks odd somehow. The new features look nice, but it's not that much of an improvement over my current one. The inbuilt psu is a nice touch, but it's not that much hassle to hide an external psu. I'd have preferred it using the mag safe connector. That way you could use a macbook charger to run it or even run it off the cinema display.
The price though is killer. £650 is way too much for most people. VAT adjusted price in the UK should be £560 ish too. I've always thought apple were missing a beat on the mini, by making it too expensive to a impulse buy. They could tempt switchers with something under £450 I would think.
