Not that surprising I guess since it's easily the best multi-platform smartphone OS.
iPhone reigns supreme in the single handset stakes I bet but the fact that android is spread out over so many manufacturers/handsets means that as an OS, nothing can come close to it's popularity. The fact that its now available on budget (under £100) smartphones as well as the mid and high end will also help the market share.
Its not very surprising at all, but I think Androids popularity will be its undoing. With some many handsets, all different speeds and screen resolutions and budget models, it will all effect the quality and compatibility of applications. ---- Maybe
