The last card with a fan on like this had one speed and sounded like a little mosquito!
asus have made a passive cooled one
Nvidia seem to be gimping their low end cards on purpose it seems! The 9800GT and GT240 are faster than all the bus powered Nvidia cards which have replaced them and yet are cheaper too. Even the OEM GT440 was far superior to the one released to retail.
I'm not too bothered by that really. Nobody is seriously expecting to play crysis on a 520, since it's practically useless for all but trivial gaming, it's better to focus on power conservation. As long as it can decode and play back HD video, all is fair, I think.
Well as a Fermi based gpu it's unlikely to win any efficiency awards either.
as much as it is "new" it does take talent to release a card that is worse than older generation products.
at this rate both ATI/AMDs and Intels onboard will kill any low end NV cards off as being a joke.
It should be pointed out the 9500GT was a 50W TDP card, around $100 at launch, and really intended at a slightly higher market segment than this new card, which really is basic for discrete cards.
It's not "worse" than previous generations, it has more features, lower TDP etc without sacrificing performance. I doubt it's possible for Nvidia to make a much cheaper Fermi card without it selling at a loss, there is a minimum cost to manufacture and distribute a board, regardless if how much you gimp the actual GPU.
Want something cheaper? Buy an older gen card, won't have great performance per watt though.
