Same with Star Wars: The Old Republic.
This is all well and good im all for getting patches etc right away, and i also understand that you want to push your own service (Origin) .... but why in gods kitchen are you the dearest place to buy the dam game ?
Nuts .............
I will be buying it anyway, just not from Origin.

thats all well and good - but steam can put those kind of restrictions on because (correct me if im wrong) it has by far and large the biggest user count by quite a margin - be curious to know if Steam users outnumber the collective total of the other download sites.
Probably not the best call they have made...meh...not fussed either way - will get it from whoever sells it at the cheapest price in the nearest sale.

I'm not pretending to know you well based on our interaction on the forums but, if the game is half as awesome as it looks like it will be, you'll buy it…..if you don't you need to have your head examined
[evil laugh] Mwahahahaha! [/evil laugh]
Again I'm someone who doesn't care too much where a game is bought from, yes Steam is handy but I only fire it up when I want to play games so technically Origin is more streamlined for me (I don't 'do' MP)
I do think it's madness when the EA direct price is so high compared to pre-ordering & getting a physical copy, if I hadn't got it from EA for that £16/£17 price (or whatever it was) then I'd be waiting until after release & probably buying a hard copy.

It was ages ago, you have to jump on the deals when they come up.

Honestly, I have been desperate to see a BF3 ever since I started playing BF2, which was an extremely long time ago. I think I've got about 600+ hours of BF2 experience, used to play it a heck of a lot at one point.
Now though, I've got a shedload of games through Steam sales, meaning I'm in no rush to acquire new ones at full price, no matter how good they are (still haven't played Portal 2 for instance). And my entire games library is on Steam. I have it running all the time, it's extremely convenient and I'm comfortable running it as my only games platform.
I have games on Origin, but they were all free - there's no way I would fork out money for anything on Origin. Steam makes my life a heck of a lot easier now I've done away with discs and the like, and there's no particular incentive for me to do away with that convenience and start complicating things again.
If EA want to leave Steam out of the equation, then fine, it's up to them. But I won't be buying it.
The last non-Steam enabled games I purchased were a few for the Hexus LAN, because I didn't have them and they were overpriced on Steam direct download. Before that, i.e. when not forced to by circumstance, it was probably CoD4 in 2007. Not certain, but it's the last one I can find in my order histories.
Well, they've all but ruled it out. Fingers crossed they continue to try to thrash out a deal with Valve to make sure it does get on Steam.
It's the only way EA will be getting my money, and while there probably aren't many idiots like me who are prepared to cut off their nose to spite their face, hopefully they'll see our bloodied visages and either have pity, or be suitably repulsed, into working out an agreement with Valve.
If all of the other games I play (which are all available on Steam) were available on Origin, I would consider switching over...
(PS I don't think Valve are blameless here either but these two babies need to have their heads smashed together and told to s&^%ing well work it out).
