How does this compare to a mac mini, as a friend has just bought one as a media center PC?

The older, slightly larger Zotacs are/were ace. Very neat, inexpensive little PC in a tiny case. We've bought them for a variety of reasons, such as for running display systems in foyers and for exhibitions, or as cheap Linux boxes for controlling various bits of hardware. The ones we've got are certainly very quiet, although I doubt I've ever listened to them closely under any kind of serious processing load.

The only bad thing I have to say about Zotac's offerings is that it's very easy to scratch the shiny black lids. They make great little Linux machines - I've had Ubuntu 10.4 and Scientific Linux running on them just fine. Not really used Windows on them yet.

According to the techreport review there will be a barebones model (no HDD or RAM) for $270 which is ~£160. Add a 4gb sodimm for ~£20 and 320gb 7200rpm 2.5" hdd for ~£35

~£215. Still a bit pricy with no OS, but I suppose that's the premium for such a small system over other nettops.

Wonderful but flawed.

Noise is the issue caused by the fan. They have tried to make the thing too small. Drop the HD, SSD is fine (maybe 1.8" format with a different mounting configuration) and make box slightly bigger with aim for passive, convestion cooling (or one fan to shift air slowly) and ZOTAC have a winner.

Its also using the current/older generation of E350, there is a new one on the way that supports faster ram ( news was on here I think?).

Agreed! I have one and for your extra £30 you get Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit as well. A nettop with similar spec should be cheaper surely considering you you don't have to include the screen, battery etc?

I reckon £199.99 with Windows 7 tops.

smaller always == more expensive though, and this thing has the footprint of a CD jewel case, for crying out loud! To pack a 1.6Ghz dual core processor and 80-shader radeon GPU into something that small is pretty impressive. A laptop has much more space to work the design into. Also, this is far more of a niche - i.e. low volume - product than an entry level laptop, so again, price hike. Plus Displayport, USB3, bundled remote, vesa mount ... I think you get the picture

Considering the cost of pico-itx motherboards, an asking price of ~ £330 (assuming you pick up an OEM copy of Win7) for something with that spec at that size isn't terrible, but personally I'd be very tempted buy a barebones + 4GB and a small SSD to get the best out of it. You'd end up with one very nippy, very tiny, very efficient, general purpose computer...
