    Has it? I thought it had relied on repeated benchmarking of a wide variety of actual games...

    Not sure about that... if we're talking about hardware review sites, then yes, of course.

    If you're a PC/component manufacturer though, and you want to test relative performance of different machines, something like 3DMark is ideal. Or if you want to verify whether a machine is performing "as expected", again it would suit perfectly.

    Running a whole suite of games would be incredibly labour-intensive for little benefit in those scenarios.
