For when long term reliability and total storage capacity/price is an issue
a 900gb SSD would cost a fortune these days. if it was about £80 i'd get one or two for the laptop, but i'm guessing it will be a lot more
Seeing as it's a SAS interface, won't it only go in servers? For a file server, it's probably a good thing. Get rid of those hundreds of 146Gb disks...
smaller form factor for ARM arrays?
Servers already have 900GB disks in 2.5" SAS but at 10k instead of 10.5k. High end workstations also have SAS controllers and theres nothing stopping you buying a SAS controller for a desktop apart from the combined cost of the controller and disk.
They should stick a SATA board on it for laptops when it becomes cheaper to produce but SSD's are getting bigger and cheaper every week so it's debatable whether or not it's worth it.
SSD all the way now for me - SAS typically doubles you IOPS then you're back at your limit all over again and good RAID gets expensive, so unless lots of space with lots of speed across all of it is required, SSDs are the way.
