What is the purpose of having a 27" monitor that's only 1080p?

Fantastic monitor for the price especially since it has an IPS panel. Here is another review from TFT central:

Its good to see companies actually tackling panel quality first than E-PEEN(just like with the MP wars).

Would be helpful to note whether the screen can handle 24hz playback on the HDMIs (eg. sub 60hz) for blu-ray etc, as a 27" 1080p IPS screen would be at its best for movies etc.
If it really had a thin bezel instead of this blatant attempt to deceive the consumers, it would be a great option for Eyefinity.
Since it doesn't, 'meh'. Just another sub-par 1080p 27" monitor (sub-par because IPS or not, 1920x1080 doesn't belong in 27" monitors)
Price for quality doesn't even come close to iiyama's I'm afraid. I'll stick with them
Current specs:
CPU: Intel i5 3570k Overclocked @ 4.6Ghz GPU: MSI Twin Frozr 7850 @ 1000Mhz Cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 RAM: 16Gb Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA Z77X-D3H
Not a resolution as such, but a DPI value certainly. I've got a 1680x1050 22" to my left (90 dpi) and a 2560x1440 27" in front of me (109 dpi) and I by far prefer the higher DPI monitor, afaik 100 is the sweet spot but this AOC monitor falls well below, coming in at 82. If it's something you care about particularly then you'd probably be better off saving your money and buying a 22" 1080p IPS display (that's the sweet spot for that resolution).
Where are the 1600p displays like the 10 inch display freaking Nexus 10
This is really subjective though and really depends on view distance. For example, I also go with 22" 1080p displays, but only at around 25 - 30" view distance, any closer and they are awful. It is why I read almost everything on my Transformer Infinity, it has a 280 PPI display. I'd wager that desktop display sweet spots for the 1/2 - 1 meter view distance will be around 150 - 200 DPI, but it is really subjective depending on the viewers eyes.afaik 100 is the sweet spot but this AOC monitor falls well below, coming in at 82. Saying, "Resolution could be higher" is a bit harsh as a negative point.
Did it advertise more than 1080p? Is there a law saying that 27" monitors need to be 1440p minimum?
Anybody who bought it thinking they'd got a complete bargain without reading the basic part of the spec list first would be a complete eejit.
Absolute cheapest 27" 1440p screen I could find recently (ignoring the Korean Shimians, Catleaps etc) was one by DGM for £310 so no-one could realistically expect this on a 27" at £230
Saying that text/graphics look a little blocky would possibly convey the same information without sounding like you're expecting the impossible.
1080p isn't that bad for a 27" monitor, I use one all the time. It is just fine, and it kind of makes me wonder if any of you ever have that are complaining so much about it.
I'm not arguing that higher res wouldn't be better, because it would obviously be better, but you also need to factor in cost. And if this is your price range then you're not going to be getting 2560.
Nice design and stile! Very nice indeed
Design/Ext. = Good. very nice.
Specs = I'm not sure.
I bought this monitor a few weeks ago, following a thread here on Hexus to decide on a new 27" monitor, and I can agree with the review that it's fantastic. Have yet to properly calibrate it but even with stock settings, the picture quality is great. Black's could be a little richer, but I think that's a complaint of many IPS panels, no? Other than that, I've been playing PC games, console games, blu-ray's etc and they all look excellent.
The whole '1080p is too small for a monitor of that size' thing... Well, if you have the monitor right up to your face then yes, it's a little noticable. You'll also damage your eyes and neck by having the screen so close. I have quite a large desk so can push the screen back another 6-10 inches further back, compared to where my 22" monitor used to sit, and I have absolutely no problems.
Saying that it's missing pixels or isn't a proper 27" screen... For fear of starting a flame war, I just feel that that's a bit over-zealous/over-the-top. There's nothing wrong with 1080p on a 27" screen. Yes, I'm sure the extra pixels make the picture look a lot better but there's noting 'wrong' with the pciture quality at 1080p. Like I said, it's great! There's also no point getting a screen with that high a resolution if you want to plug in a console - most consoles do 1080p as a max so it would have to scale up the image which just wouldn't look as good as running it on a 1080p screen. The same, to an extent, will be true of watching hi-def video. The only thing that absolutely benefits from from 1440p res are videogames BUT.... you need to have a graphics card that can run at that res. I imagine that mine (6870) could run at that res, but only with most of the settings on medium and, at least in my mind, there's no point in having a screen with that high a resolution to then.. turn the graphics settings down. You're getting it for the best picture quality right? Not so you can see poorer quality picture in more detail!
In short, 1080p on a 27inch monitor is absolutely fine and in fact, the 1080p resolution is more beneficial for some applications of the monitor. This monitor itself, for the price, is fantastic and I would thoroughly recommend it. Want the absolute bestest possible picture quality? Then you probably do want a 2560x1440 screen, but will have to accept that on top of the minimum £310 price for such a screen, you'll probably be spednign £300+ on a graphics card that can actually handle at the resolution with sufficiently high graphical settings in games to make it worthwhile...
Hmm. Tempting. I've currently got a 1680x1050 22" Dell and fancy a 27 incher as a happy-Xmas-to-me prezzie. My eyesight sucks anyway so probably won't notice the resolution much
I would really recommend a 21.5" 1080p IPS monitor. Acer and Asus make some, I'm sure others do too. Of course it depends how good your eyesight is, how much reading you do, and if you are bothered by abysmal PPI, but they are cheaper, more pixel dense, and look pretty much just as good. You just won't find a 120hz IPS display.
