Agreed. Not sure if the icon size would bother me - every time I've expected small text/icons to be a problem, I've been fine, but 1920*1080 over 21.5" is the highest DPI I've used so far.

I don't see 4k becoming in any way mainstream for several years. Likely not for another 3 hardware generations at least. Even then they won't be popular until there is enough retail reasons to buy 'em, ie movies & tv progs. By that time we're talking around 5 years and the replacement console generation will be becoming apparent - the next gen being unsuited to running 4k displays.

Could this just be another 3D phenomenon with the companies pushing it but the consumers just not buying it? No real content available and for most people just massive overkill for the living room or PC. Like 3D it will be great for movies in cinemas but can't really see it peculating down to the living room at an affordable price with content to match. Basically a rich person's bragging rights!!

Just some additional information for anyone who is curious.

While the display will work with nVidia and AMD GPUs when using a single DisplayPort cable with MST, it will only work with AMD GPUs if you are driving it via two HDMI cables. This is because NVIDIA Surround doesn't work in 2x1 configurations unlike Eyefinity. NVIDIA decided instead to create an EDID whitelist in their driver so they could support these kinds of tiled displays while still crippling their Windows driver to prevent true 2x1 and 2x2 Surround with any monitors.

Should be fine for me. Currently running 1080p on a 15" monitor so will be slightly larger than that, even. For me, fine up to a couple of feet away but if I lean back I find myself zooming in for text.

How do you get 1080p on a 15" monitor? Presumably a laptop?

I have a cheap 14Megapixel camera which produces a 4288x3216 picture, does this make a computer monitor which can only display a 3,840x2,160 picture obsolete before I get my greedy hands on one?

This. If we look back, there were a significant percentage of 720p TVs when the hi def standard first appeared and of course a slew of 1366 panels and virtually no 1080p. Nowadays it's pretty hard to find an HDTV which isn't full HD (1080p). The full next gen standard is 8k and 4k will just be a filler until 8k content becomes more prevalent. A 4k filler makes marginally more sense for computer monitors vs TVs though imo as gamers will be limited by GPU power for a while yet.

I run my system through 2 different projectors and I don't get POST/BIOS on either when I have an AMD graphics card installed, but I see evetrything I expect with nVidia

You can use it in portrait mode, but this entails unscrewing the stand to do so.
