Success depends on which 'AAA titles' get announced for it. The current linux games catalogue on Steam is pretty weak. Yes there are a lot of titles, but most are indie or old.
Very interesting. I'm quite looking forward to their next announcements.
Valve can't count to three, and yet they're making three announcements.
Either the third announcement will never happen, OR WE BLOODY WELL BETTER BE GETTING HL3.
I can't wait for this. Hopefully this will allow streaming games from my PC to my really old laptop. If so its lost nvidia a shield sale as I'd rather have a 15" screen, mouse and keyboard! Just need to wait and see what the required specs are...
Good announcement!
Just hope the 3rd announcement isnt delayed for the traditional 6 years.
This is 3D0 all over again, a platform that many companies can make, quite powerful (and hence expensive), and no exclusive titles. Fighting against large, incumbent platforms.
Unless ... Half Life 3 as a SteamOS/SteamBox exclusive title?
All hail Gabe, leader of the PC master race
I found the icons there are using to represent each announcement quite interesting
1. O (steamos) 2. [O ] (square brackets around an O) 3. O+O
If O was the steamos announcement 2 looks like the os in a box (probably the steambox) but what could announcement 3 be?
My first guess would be third party steamboxes.
Third announcement: Half Life 3 will be the launch title of Steambox...
And then I woke up.
I just cba with HL3 anymore, HL2 was good, the episodes 'ok' then a million year wait and funnily enough my interest has waned, things have moved on so much in that time, will Valve create another game-changer?
As for it being canned, hahahahaha, not a chance, HL3 is a license to print money.
Utterly disagree. 3DO was a licensed product, and h/w manufacturers had to pass on that license cost in the cost of their product, so the consoles produced were expensive. If what Valve's announcement is saying is the whole story then ACME etc can pick up a SteamOS license for $0. So all you're left with is the cost of producing/shipping/etc your hardware.
Also there's quite a lot of unhappiness about the lack of any backwards compatibility with either PS4 or XBone, so you're talking about a relatively restricted choice of titles. SOS has that too because there's not a heck of a lot of S4L titles available now, but SOS, PS4 and XBone are more or less starting from the same level of support.
The other issue that occurs to me is costs to software manufacturers. PS4/XBone both need "proper" development environments (expensive), SOS looks - on the face of it - to merely need a decent spec PC. I'm also curious about license fees - there's been comment in the past (from EA?) about the money they need to give to Sony and Microsoft.
I'm going to be very contrary here. I can't see the mythological HL3 being a SOS/SB exclusive - Valve could do with the revenue? Secondly, on a personal level, I'm supremely unbothered by it - played HL2 and enjoyed it but I wouldn't say the successors were "must haves" in my book.
Interestingly enough, most of the feedback I've read on "enthusiast" sites has been pretty "meh" or even negative. I can't understand this myself, since a upgradable console that you can pretty much build for the cost of the hardware would seem tailor made for technerd approval.
Me, I'm looking for a cheap SATA-eSATA case for a 3.5" drive and planning to slap one of my spare 500GB drives to use as a SteamOS boot drive.
I have no interest in running this OS on its own, maybe if I VM it I would install it. Cant see me ever buying the Steam box or installing the OS for just one machine, even dual boot is pointless for how I use my PC for gaming and such.
This is very confusing, I cant see a point of it as PC gaming doesn't involve a TV all that much. Hmmm maybe someone will find this useful.
