4k is : 4096×2160

UHD is : 3840×2160

Ahhhh FFS, why with few exceptions are laptops either 1366x768 or now UHD... far too few pixels or waaaay too many pixels. Something like 1680x1050, 1920x1080 or even 2560x1440 is much more appropriate, too many pixels is just a waste of power when you have to do so much scaling anyway to make anything big enough to click on.

2560x1440 is pretty sharp from 2 feet away on my 27" desktop screen, I can't imagine needing MORE on a screen half the size. Just WTF, marketing bollocks.

I imagine its a case of what panels are available cheaply off the shelf. Apple want retina displays, so someone is making them, and its cheaper for everyone to end up on one panel than two. Personally any widescreen laptop resolution is IMHO awful. I'm clinging to my battered old T400 at work so I can keep a 4:3 screen, which is eminently more usable for office tasks. Widescreen isn't tall enough for two side by side pages on a 14/15" screen at a decent size so you end up with buckets of wasted space.

If you're that bothered, just run your 3840*2160 panel at 1920*1080 resolution. It will scale fine. Of course, you'll be paying a bit more for the panel, but if it's the most popular choice then price will soon drop anyway.

And if they sort out DPI scaling then I don't think it is just marketing hyperbole, although I take the point that as things stand on a small screen it is.
