Google get a lot of hate but it's nice to see a big corporation trying new things and not just selling another copy of whatever crap is already on the market.

This isn't about Google constantly scanning where you are in every day life. This is a research project that lets developers use the custom handset to build new apps and services that aren't really possible with previous handsets. There are already

A very simple usage for a handset like this would be an estate agent creating a walk through model of a house to sell. You could also creat a floor plan from this data with a click of a button. With higher resolution and higher quality cameras you can then choose any still you want for schedule photos after the person is long gone.

I also wonder if this could be used for 3D scanning an object, rather than a location. I know 3D scanning has become far more accessable recently, but this kind of tech could but it in the hands of pretty much everyone.

but with their shonky permissions settings on google mobiles app devs will ask for "full rights to cameras, network and GPS" and the phones will be sending it to all and sundry in no time...
