I wouldn't say 1366x768 is unusable, my hp touchpad is only 1024x768 (9.7") IPS and is great for watching some futurama at bedtime ! I admit though that if you are coming from a higher res' screen it might seem primitive.
Sorry to be pedantic but borderline unusable is what i said. Trying to do anything amounts to utter frustration on such a turd resolution. It is the utter devil.
At least with 1024 x 768 its a 'square' resolution and therefore a bit better optimised for web browsing
Acer. Always was and always will be s**t.
Funny, that's the resolution of the panel I'm typing this comment on but I seem to be managing. It's also the resolution of my TV downstairs, and is somewhat higher than my 7" tablet, both of which I somehow manage to use.
I'm not entirely sure what you're using as your benchmark, but for the Windows 8 user interface 1366x768 is utterly usable. It may not be ideal, but there's nothing actually wrong with it.

1366x768 is pretty nasty. Having said that, I seem to cope when using my 13" laptop with that resolution, so I don't think I'd go quite so far as to say borderline unusable - but I highly doubt I'll ever buy a laptop with a screen that low res ever again. In fact I doubt I'll buy a phone with a screen that low res ever again
Edit: in fact there are clearly tasks that are suited to 1366x768 and those that aren't. Tasks that are include consuming - e.g. web browsing, games, videos - and perhaps also essay writing, that sort of thing. Things that are a real struggle with that resolution are complicated copy-pasting tasks and comparing folders/files, spreadsheets, coding, image editing, reading large pdfs.. the list goes on.
Touche ! So it's more the combination of fairly low res and the widescreen format you were referring to ? Although i'm ok with my tablets res' I do have bad memories of my old netbook's low res widescreen display, 1024x600 I think it was, and it wasn't really any good for serious work.
Looks half decent.
Backlit keyboard and non reflective display would be nice.
1366x768 isn't too bad for laptops at 10, 11 or 12 inch, but for a 14"+ laptop you really need a more flexible display. I completely fail to understand why 15.6" laptops still come with 1366x768 - it's hideous and horribly limiting.
Well I'm used to using a netbook with 1024x576 or something like that. Now, that is painfull to use.
To give you an idea of how bad it is, the Acrobat Reader print dialog grows a scroll bar to let you hit print!
Again, i didnt say it was unusable, i said borderline. My old x121e has that resolution and it was just about ok for browsing the web and watching videos, but even then it wasn't very good. A video resolution is typically 1280 x 720 so you have to do a bit of scaling for it to work (which is noticeable) and you cant fit much of a webpage on the screen with windows.
If you try and do anything productivity related it becomes a constant battle of switching windows and scrolling around all the time.
If you want to use 'big icons' in the taskbar, you cant pin that many applications before it starts getting a bit full.
I lived with it for a good few years as my general casual machine and it drove me nuts.
@Biscuit: Lol. You may not have heard of it but there's a psychiatric condition called Borderline Personality Disorder. One in-a-nutshell synopsis of people like that is "I hate you. Don't leave me". Sounds like your old machine brought that out in you until finally you were able to part company and find relief.
Not quite. I bought it because the previous laptop I had was broken, this was cheap and I planned it as a temporary fill in until better panels started to become the norm and chips with IGPs battery life improved. Nothing really significantly changed in the market throughout its life and they continued loading laptops up with this stupid resolution unless you were willing to spend silly money, so I stuck with it. More recently there have been better options but a new job meant a new laptop and I had a generous budget to play with.
I will eventually get a personal laptop/tablet to fully replace the x121e as it still has some duties but I'd quite like LTE.
Or you know, you could just presume you know someone's personal circumstances by the brief synopsis they post on an internet forum and unnecissarily take the risk of offending them.... That's cool.

They served me just fine with their 10" AspireONE Netbook... still using it, incidentally, although I'm not trying to game on it any more, heh heh.
That same model is still selling for the same price, as well, despite being an XP OEM build. In fact, if it wasn't for this Netbook, I'd likely never have joined the 21st Century.
It's small and light enough that I can whack it in with the rest of my minimalist luggage, hop on the motor-sickle and remain tech-happy when I go away for a few days.
