I really didn't expect it to beat the Titan X..

yeah the graphs do seem a little weird. In all realistic terms the 980ti should be pretty much equal, or even a little slower, than the titan x as all the clock speeds seem the same, it's just the slightly lower number of 'cuda cores'.

The only thing I can come up with is that due to less 'cuda cores' and ram it doesn't throttle down due to heat as much. Either that or the drivers are better optimised for the 980ti over the titan x which seems a bit weird if it is the case.

The latter should be a Titan-X.

AMD needs DX12 and a game changer of a R9 390 GPU to close this gap.

If they can only marginally beat the average fps of this chip with a dual gpu solution that draws more than twice the power ... min fps on the 295x looks hideous.
I'd take more consistent but lower fps any day of the week.

So with a slower double precision they accomplished achieving better fps with less cores...the price point is very aggressive from nvidia and knowing that aftermarket coolers and higher clocks from vendors will improve the numbers my 980 looks like a bad buy lol. The true test for these GPUs will be when DX12 is implemented into games and we can see which will be the best bang for the buck at 4k.

Titan X owners must be kicking themselves. Odd that the 980ti drew more power than the titanX when gaming, the boost profile must be really aggressive.

It would be a shame if AMD didn't get a boost in sales from their new card; imagine the prices nvidia and intel would be gouging from customers without AMD.

It seems nvidia have cooked about the strongest they could with current the current generation on this card. That it's not being held in reserve to beat the 390x(/whatever the "top" AMD card will be in the end) is perhaps a little telling.

I'm not saying I'm undeniably correct on this one but I have a suspicion the top AMD card spanks it. Happy to make that a prediction and leave it here

Aside from the fact the 295X2 is what 2-3 years old now? But a 390X will be interesting for sure.

Nice to wake up to this review. Interesting that the performance is so good at this level. I wonder if there will only be reference cards or whether they will let OEMs try their hand at custom coolers from the off. Looking forward even more to the 390x reveal and reviews. Just hope that both cards are going to be available in numbers, I'm pretty desperate to get one or the other ASAP Ball in your court AMD, better be a good return!

Lol so it's as good as the Titan X? Why would you buy a Titan then... (unless going aftermarket cooling, because it'll be able to boost higher)

The 980ti was reviewed on newer drivers, which might be partly responsible. It might also stay boosting for longer (haven't look at the real world boost speeds yet) if they're willing to sacrifice a bit of longevity for better performance.

edit: ah, yes, page 3 says the same about the boost speed. Though running diff. driver versions is a bit annoying.
