To be honest I think this is one of Intels less exciting new generations, it's a tock-tock release.

Is Cannonlake still on for next year? Wake me up when that lands.

So one dual core CPU, sold in 6 different speed/power ratings. Wake me up when they do something interesting.

Edit: Lol, too long to hit post, seems I am not alone in my thoughts

Problem is that many puters have been fast enough for years and years and cpu's are only a small part of the equation
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!

Yup, the GPU is slowly but surely taking a lead role in computation performance.

Indeed, I've not noticed any significant improvement for day to day computing since I had a 13" laptop with a 1.3GHz dual core Pentium (one of the core 2 based ones). I guess it doesn't take much in the way of compute power to add "lol wtf!" to the comments on a facebook post...

Speaking of GPU's, as Intel and AMD aren't going to be releasing drivers for older versions of Windows could that mean inoperable IGPU on anything other than Windows 10?

They're not? AMD currently support as far back as Windows 7, and you can always move to Ubuntu too.

No. It might mean no fancy DX drivers for playing games etc., but Win 7 has generic VGA drivers included that work just fine with modern iGPUs.

Plus mainstream driver support for AMD, as Kalniel points out, currently goes back to Windows 7 for all products, and anything up to Bonnaire is supported on Win XP: http://support.amd.com/en-us/downloa...rOnServer=true

So there's certainly no imminent reason to think that AMD or Intel iGPUs will be non-functional under older versions of Windows (and again as Kalniel points out, there's always linux).

From what I've been reading they're not...
Both Intel and AMD representatives who were contacted also confirmed that the policy was in place for future processors like Kaby Lake and Zen.

AMD said its CPU roadmap was "fully aligned with Microsoft's software strategy", and Intel clarified: "No, Intel will not be updating Win 7/8 drivers for 7th Gen Intel Core [Kaby Lake] per Microsoft's support policy change."

Sorry i thought i made it clear i didn't mean they wouldn't work, that was my intention but I'm guessing i failed.
I meant to say some parts of them may not work and the most obvious "part" i could think of was the IGPU.

And yes there's always Linux, it just whiffs a bit of collusion, shouldn't it be down to CPU manufactures what OS's they support.

Re: Intel launches 'Kaby Lake' 7th generation Core CPUs for laptops

I got the impression it was the integrated north/south bridge, power management sort of stuff that wouldn't be fully supported in old versions of Windows, not the GPU. Even then, I would expect the BIOS to set things up to work (else it couldn't even boot into an OS installer) and at that point you might be missing some power management finesse (so meh on the desktop) but it really should basically work.

Re: Intel launches 'Kaby Lake' 7th generation Core CPUs for laptops

Yea that's what i thought at first, some power management stuff or some feature that simply isn't supported in previous OS's, it's just that wording of what the Intel and AMD representatives said made me a suspicious, maybe their not going to release or even block the drivers being installed on previous versions, i guess in the end we'll just have to wait and see, although Microsoft have been rather aggressive with their push to get people on Windows 10 and it certainly seems they're the ones calling the shots with regards to chip manufactures drivers.

Bit of both, I'd say. AMD and Intel can write drivers to make those processors work on any OS they want, but if MS says "we will not support Windows 7 running on Kaby Lake" then there's not a right lot Intel can do about that - even if they write the drivers it wold remain an unsupported platform from MS's point of view. That's no so much collusion as coersion. It'd cost Intel time and money to work on a platform that the platform vendor had dropped support for.

If anything, MS's decision is more likely to see AMD and Intel reinvesting time and effort into Linux support, which frankly would be a good thing for everyone...
