I would go for the 1070ti just because it has a slight edge and a more established set of tech behind it. But in all honesty I am not a fan of the current gen of GPU's at all due to pricing tiers, I am not even a major fan of the 1070 that I already own but it performs well with what I use it for so I wouldn't say I dislike it, it's just "meh".

1070 Ti. AMD lost me as a GPU customer with the Vega series.

Neither, Vega draw too much power and NVidia has really pissed me with their marketing tactics.

Vega + Freesync. Gsync is just too expensive.

We know Vega is improving with each driver update and so far it's the only full fat DX12 option.

Since I have Vega 56 I will vote for that

Sure if you bought a 1070ti near launch it's a good card and good value. But with cheaper freesync and possible future driver updates coming for Vega, even with the extra watts, I would choose Vega 56 now. And I did

Try and get it for launch price though

Neither. The price point between this and other "tiers" doesn't make any sense... I'd just get a 1080 GTX, especially with the prices the way they are.

Re: QOTW: AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti?

For me? Neither. The games I play run on my A10-4600m, and I can buy a whole new laptop for the price of one of those cards!

If someone asked me for advice? Tricky; as with most things there are pros and cons on both sides.

Freesync is a big plus on AMD's side; most people seem to agree that adaptive refresh is one of the biggest experience enhancers of the last few years, and AMD's ecosystem is so much cheaper than nvidia's that you could probably go Vega 64 + freesync monitor compared to 1070 Ti + g-sync monitor. Score 1 for AMD!

OTOH, custom 1070 Ti cards are already in the shops. Want a Vega 56 and you're buying a reference card, which means AMD's lacklustre and barely adequate blower cooler. They're hotter and noisier than they need to be, and AMD really can't get the custom cooled cards on the shelves fast enough. Point to nvidia, imo.

Which leaves us looking for a decider ... maybe power draw? Most people are just going to assume that's an auto-win for nvidia. But I'd like to remind everyone of those tricksy power profiles AMD has got going on, and what difference they actually make to gaming ... I'd love to see a custom cooled Vega 56 in power saving profile go up against a 1070 Ti; I suspect the power draw and performance would be rather close...

Re: QOTW: AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti?

If money was no object both now and in the future then it would be the 1070 Ti, then again if money wasn't an object it would be the 1080 Ti.

As it is however it would be the V56, that is if AIB ever get round to releasing something other than blowers, not only does the V56 have a more complete feature set but it will probably still be a viable card for longer than anything from Nvidia.

Re: QOTW: AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti?

AMD, partly due to major driver issues with Nvidia i've had in the past, compounded by extensive anti-consumer/competitive practices by Nvidia ever since preventing me going back.

If Nvidia dropped their worst crap, i'd treat them and AMD on a level playing field (which at the moment would mean a Nvidia card) but every mention of the proprietary gsync or physx* technologies pushes me back to AMD.

*This one being the real killer, where they brought out an upcoming standard and locked it down hard, going as far as to explicitly de-optimise it for competitor systems on x86 And even disable physx rendering in their own GPUs if an AMD card is detected in the system.

To add to the power draw point. Everyone always forgets this awesome feature. Radeon Chill! Keeps my card way cooler than without and genuinely feels a little more responsive. I'm shocked Nvidia haven't attempted something similar. My system is pretty hot, so my GPU running 5-10c cooler on average is a huge help!

If I had to buy now it would be the 1070TI but I can't bring myself to buy a 10-series card right now as the next one should be arriving soon'ish. Will just make do with the 980 for now.

Re: QOTW: AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti?

The power efficiency of the Pascal GPUs is a plus, but on a desktop PC isn't a high priority. It's far outweighed by not being tied to G-Sync for smooth gameplay.

When I got my Vega 64 (standard black blower reference card) I was surprised by the heft and quality of the cooler - it's metal and not the plastic of Polaris cards. The blower design has to force >300W through a tiny grill in the chassis bracket, and this is a constraint to heat flow whatever the implementation - and this implementation is actually pretty good - just don't expect to boost performance by throwing more power at the card as there really isn't the thermal headroom.

I much prefer Linux on my desktop rather than Windows so I'm looking forward to kernel 4.15 - in-built open source driver stack for Vega, with dev builds already faster and compatible with more games than the hybrid driver. AMD haven't exactly been quick with the drivers, but then there's no news either on NVidia supporting Wayland etc. with their proprietary drivers, and fat chance of them getting open source drivers up to scratch.

So in the end - given the choice in the article I'd go with the Vega 56 - even with the stock cooler I'd be able to tweak it to keep temperature and noise in check and gain a little performance at the same time (as I found with my 64). It might not show as faster than the 1070Ti in the bar charts, but that wouldn't matter with actual gameplay being more than adequately fluid.

Why? It's more expensive than V64, and slower - the only card price that really doesn't make sense right now is the 1080, the rest make sense relative to each other.

Nvidia purely because more of the software I use supports or performs better with cuda than opencl.

Re: QOTW: AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti?

None, Not interested in this generation from either company.
I run 980ti's in SLI, I tend to skip a generation.
If i was budget conscious I would go AMD Vega with their fine wine that seems to last longer. If I wanted raw power right now I would go Nvidia at a cost.
Not a good time to buy any card if you ask me, "True" next gen is only a few months away at least on the nvidia side.
Wait it out even if you don't want the new cards, Old ones will drop in price and there will be people like me selling 980ti's very cheap on the used market!
