    Re: Asus Lyra

How does this compare to BT's Whole Home solution (mentioned in the conclusion)?

Can the big glowing ring be turned off? At least with a single lit diode you can cover it up with a marker or tape - I would've thought that with this sort of product you'd only want to see a distracting light if there's a problem.

    Hi,

Yup, the LEDs can be turned off within the app, located within the Settings section. And with respect to the BT Home Hub, which is currently £99 for a pair, we are going to find out soon.

A tad too expensive for me at the moment.

That's a relief! Thanks for the update and look forward to seeing some comparisons.

At that price Netgear's Orbi seems a better comparison, as it also uses one of the 5GHZ bands for backhaul?

Can you use the gigE ports for ethernet backhaul like you can on the BT discs?

I'm very impressed with the BT Whole home disc pack which was much cheaper than this when I bought it - IIRC I got a triple disc pack for under £200, so I'm interested to see how the numbers compare.

I own the BT ones, you can make them 'go dark' from the Android app.

This set and the Netgear Orbi justifies a higher price by using a dedicated backhaul radio. BT Wholehome like most of these sets lose bandwidth on the satellites by using the same 5GHz radio for clients and backhaul.

"And that's where it's overkill for most, as the typical UK home is now well serviced by premium routers or, even, high-performance ISP-supplied devices such as the BT Smart Hub."

I think you may be living in a bit of a bubble there Tarinder. Sure on modern home with stud partition walling a premium router may suffice but on older homes with thick brick walls even premium routers struggle to provide good coverage, especially on 5Ghz network. Hence these mesh solutions are a god send. Currrently using BT Whole Home and so far it's been impeccable but need to add a fourth disc to ensure complete high speed coverage, and yes my house is quite large by modern urban standards but it ain't no mansion, just a 4 bed old spacious property that's been extended and yes has brick walls throughout.

It's not just older homes, I live in a modest 3 floor town house, it's 5 years old and all stud walling, no internal brick. Despite that even a good WiFi AP on the ground floor struggled to provide coverage on the top floor at the opposite end, especially at 5GHz and for smaller devices like smartphones or Fire sticks.

BT Wholehome fixed the problem for me too by having one at front and one at back of house, works very well and hand-off is seamless.
