This must be untrue as it says its going to be pin compatible with an existing socket. That doesn't sound right for IntelIntel will create its first mainstream 8-core processor(s)...
They do appear worried...at last
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!
The article said that they should support 300 series boards with the same socket as 8th gen.
"The new octa-core Intel processors will be use the LGA1151 socket and 300-series chipset say the sources"
Can't get more "pin compatible" than that.
As for full support/compatibility, it's hard to say Intel can go either way, they could use the same excuse as with 7th gen in saying with two extra cores you need better power delivery so in that regard probably not.
I thought the ongoing rumour was that the 8-core processors would be on the Z390 chipset only.
My system currently has an i7 4770 on the LGA1151 socket, I would've gladly upgraded to a better processor if Intel didn't keep changing the socket with releases of new processors. This locking of people to a specific socket is why on my next build I'm going AMD, they're finally competitive and they offer proper backwards compatibility plus all the cores! F*ck Intel for giving us 4C8T for all these years!
Ah. I didn't see that in the Japanese article, but I guess 'sources' did say that.
7th gen was down to the normal two gen compatibility. 6th was compatible with 5th, and even though the didn't change the pin count like before, breaking at 7 was normal. Breaking again at 8 would be a change. Not that it's out of the question, but it feels less likely due to this.
If Intel release that under £350 then I might get one, although it'll need soldering if it's to actually work.
There is noise the Z390 might be cancelled and the Z370 replacing it:
