Not bad for the platform but system integration is a more logical solution as 1 drive has <poor> redundancy

That doesn't matter much, it's just a starter home NAS. The important thing is to keep irreplaceable data backed up, so just plug in a USB HDD and you're sound.

Expensive external HDD that's attached to a network. Seems fairly NASy to me. Albeit with the CPU being rubbish for all but the most basic NAS tasks.
True, but technically you could simply attach a regular external to many routers and use it in a similarly basic way.
I know a one-bay still IS a NAS in reality, but I just don't personally think it makes sense to get a NAS unless it's three bays or more.
Yeah, but then you have to put up with interacting with consumer router software on a much more regular basis. Especially egregious if you need remote access. Truly terrifying.
True, I guess it depends purely on individual usage cases.
That doesn't change my personal view of it, but I understand that others have different needs that will mean that it does make sense for them.
