And also I just both small factor i7 3770 / 16GB to be a local server.
Enough computing power for my needs atm and in addition current prices puts me off of upgrading.
But at some point, maybe a shinning ryzen?

Same here - 12GB DDR3 1600. Considering increasing the quantity but DDR5 will be long since established before I consider anything more. It works just fine for my needs and does not present a bottleneck.

Hopefully the prices drop before 2020, the high spec DDR3 ram I bought back in 2012 is still the same price now and the equivalent high spec ddr4 is just a silly price in comparison

Yep not much chance of me introducing even DDR4 in the near future:

Desktop: 32GB DDR3
Server 1: 32GB DDR3
Server 2: 16GB DDR3
Server 3: 48GB DDR3
Server 4: 8GB DDR3

I probably don't need all of those however TBH :-D
