I suspect marketing weren't involved and hence it ended up with such a terrible name.

WMDs might not be too far from the truth. New drivers can be catastrophic...

Seems like a good way to force people into the Windows Store.

Mandate that hardware vendors must now supply drivers in this format while telling them any supporting applications must be provided via the Windows Store.

Re: Intel gets onboard with Windows Modern Drivers

Is that why a friend of mine while installing a fresh Windows 1809 got asked for disk controller divers (preventing the installation to continue)? Then he tried with a previous windows version and the installation went smooth...
Windows is getting worst by the updates.

Based on current Intel drivers and Win10, WMD is about the right description !

If marketing wasn't involved, then it probably means it wont be a dumpster fire in practice. In that case, I'm good with an unfortunate acronym.

Re: Intel gets onboard with Windows Modern Drivers

With so many MSFT screw ups on the OS, I think WMD drivers is an appropriate name. They could actually be software versions of WMD...LOL. I mean how many times does MSFT have to release an OS these days to get it right? I'm waiting to see if all the fixes are in before doing more work as we have some stuff that would be affected probably. Not sure I'd be too happy about a shiny new OS deleting some files or messing up drive/file mapping. How many other problems do they have? Braindrain is seriously affecting MSFT at this point IMHO. Intel has never been able to do vid drivers either. YMMV. I'd rather count on NV or AMD personally but whatever, bring on more competition I guess. I bet they fail at gpu next year just as they have before. Hardware matters not if drivers suck. Intel will have to PROVE their drivers are worthy of a gpu purchase, and do it for a year before I'll bite. I don't expect 1 driver a year etc. I want drivers for big game releases like AMD/NV or bust and constant improvements over the life of my card. NV/AMD will win for at least one gen of Intel until they prove they are not the past Intel with regards to drivers. I'm am woefully unimpressed by Intel drivers for gpu over their history (in or out of a cpu).
