I'm really looking forward to future cards having enough power to use ray tracing effects in multiple ways - both reflection and shadow casting at the same time for eg. and at high enough number of rays to have no artefacts. We're a long way off for now, but only a matter of time.

Yes ! @Darcotech.................., i loved my Voodoo2 SLI setup :-); for 1024/768 Looooooveliness :-)
Memories indeed Sir........,
I don't think so for two reasons:
1) It would make the barrier for entry too high
2) The pace of development is such that said solution might only be viable for a couple of years before the onboard/ondie/onchip 'cores' became powerful enough not to need it.
I reckon even the next gen of cards will be able to render todays rtx settings at a much more acceptable cost - so the scope will up to chosing both shadows and reflections rather than either/or. And then there are further options possible as well as quality improvements so the next few gens will still be sub-par. But after that I think it'll just be sorted.
An add on card with extra RT cores that can be added to an RTX card would be a great idea to keep early adopters in the game for longer, and could also look like a good investment if they could be used alongside future cards also, but yeah I think I can dream on with that one.
I still LOL at "Real Time Raytracing"...marketing bullsh*t...
