I really hope this was not part of what Win 10 automatically downloads! I know it now downloads updates automatically but have no idea what it's downloading (only aware it's happening when it says restart and install updates). I miss the days when we could pick and choose what updates to download.

we all do Scryder. But MS know that we'd all block their telemetry spyware if they gave us the chance again like with win7 so they now tell us how we should run our machines. It's this "windows as a service" BS they're moving towards.

It's actually google's fault though for pushing this route with the android OS and chromebook. The world lapped it up and never complained and other companies looked on and went "oh so that's how we can do it"

Products as a service seems to be the business model for a lot of industries nowadays unfortunately. I wasn't a fan when Adobe moved to their cloud subscription service for their programs. Same with music, I'd rather the files to be local rather than use Spotify.

Blah, blah. We own Windows 10 (Well, kind of, but not really) so maybe it's time to drop this. Until it happens, it's not happening.

P.s. The Enterprise has purchased Windows select agreements (or whatever they're called now) for years.

The story goes back a little further than Android. The continual update model is a feature of the Agile software development manifesto that launched around 2001 on the back of Kent Beck's eXtreme Programming. The adoption of Agile methodologies was one of the enablers for Software as a Service.

The problem with Agile is the engineering ideals have been corrupted by finance and marketing priorities. The industry lapped up the cost savings but has failed to deliver the customer benefit. What we are stuck with is change for change sake at best, and legalised vandalism at the worse.

Personally I think it is about time the politicians took Microsoft et al to task on the amount of electricity their feature updates are wasting.

Any news on when they are producing this fix? The article gives the KB updates that cause it, but is there any news of the actual fix yet?

Did it too me, eventually have had to reinstall Windows. Right palaver as the SSD was one of the original Samsung XP941's and only 250Gb. Tried putting in a new WD Blue SSD of 1Tb, but the X99 ASRock motherboard will not recognise it. Then found the SSD was in GPT format and would not take the operating system, had to put it to MBR for some reason. Which promptly lost the other partition on the SSD that held all the programs. Fortunately all my files are on a RAID 1 pair of WD Reds in the PC and backed up to the Synology NAS.
Thanks a bunch Microsoft, it's going to take me weeks to get everything sorted out again.

This is why I defer all updates for s year. Thank goodness for the pro version...
