So in the subset of people running the PassMark benchmark, which is probably dominated by enthusiasts who just built or upgraded a machine, AMD have hit 50% market share.

Not quite what the title is saying, but it is an important subset and I think bodes well for AMD's future.

Great performance from AMD of late , depending on your stand point , offering a better product as a whole. The Corvid thing coupled with supply obviously affected by Corvid as well has had a major effect on things. Intels slightly better performance in most games is negliable now and don't forget games for years have been optomised towards Intels architecture and as things progress I think AMD will get stronger in that area as games programmers embrace AMD more. Theres also the fact that AMD is well ahead in chip design and sincerely hope they keep pushing and make Intel really get off their backsides and come up with something rather than keep squeezing the life out of what they had. They poo , pooed the idea of chiplets and now having second thoughts. I'm not a fanboy by any means but have always favoured AMD down the years mainly for value and I don't like to see any company have have a whip hand and charge us poor sods through the nose for it as Intel have done for years. OK , AMD are now effecting higher prices as Intel did ( with a better product to my mind )but thats business after all. I hope Intel don't fall too far behind and actually come up with something worth while as we always need competition to keep a level playing field in the price frame. Anyway , AMD as we know have done exceptionally well with Ryzen and full credit to them as the underdogs , Intel need to really get a new game plan together , their R&D dept need a shake up.

Certainly a good thing for competition and in theory the consumer. The new Zen 3 range occupying a higher price range and the Zen 2 prices aren't budging at the moment and that situation will probably stay until the AM5 platform launches in Q4 pandemic permitting. Looks like AMD are also jumping on the ARM train too at some point.

TBH within the enthusiast group of users I wouldn't be shocked to see it even higher if we could actually get cpu's at rrp.... most place that are getting them in stock are massively overpriced.

AMD based laptops are in an even worse situation when it comes to stock too....

Basically it's all very good AMD having the 'best' cpu at the moment but if you can't buy it it's kind of meaningless.

Currys seem to keep getting stock in at RRP prices. Fingers crossed that is the start of proper availability.

OFC with another lockdown there could be containers full of the things at docks around the country unable to get to shops

I suspect this 'shortage' is partially deliberate. There are still stocks of perfectly serviceable CPUs from last gen and they will have to drop the price substantially once the 5 series gets properly available.

As someone who had to buy one just before Christmas, no there wasn't stock.

Things seem to be stabilizing. Currys will sell you a 3600 at £10 less than RRP, and seem to have the 5800X in stock and on the shelf in three stores in reasonable driving distance for me (though not in the little store nearest, but that's not a shock really).

The likes of Amazon are still pretty bad for stock.

Considering the massive price slashing by Intel - and Nvidia!!! - just to try to compete, I say very well done AMD and much deserved success. Here's to Zen4 and RDNA3.
Oh yes, if AMD have finished honouring those two console xmas contracts...could they kindly ramp up production of their 6000 series ASAP - you don't want Nvidia's Ti/Super incoming variants to dampen an opportunity.

Likewise. The last AMD CPU I owned was an Athlon 3200+ , must be getting on for 20 years ago now. Since then I had a couple of P4's, a Core2 Duo of some sort, a Core 2 Quad, an Ivy Bridge 3770 and then a Coffee Lake 8700.

I picked up a Ryzen 5800X a couple of weeks ago though, and am pretty happy with it. It does run a little hot (close to 90C at full chat) but, judging by the comments from AMD_Robert in this Reddit thread, and the temperature guidance graphic, it's nothing to be concerned about.

I'm still using Intel at the moment but my next upgrade will be Ryzen for sure.

I started my PC'ing last month with an intel. Out of no choice really as the AMD cpus everyone recommended was OOS. In the end bought an i5-10400f. Will be trying AMD next time.
