The prize of 'tens of thousands of dollars' probably doesn't get the top tier of hackers out of bed, white hat or black hat.
And I'm sure I've seen the phrase un****able somewhere else.
Just when you thought a bit of hacking might save us from the inevitable AI uprising...
Yes, but can it play Crysis?

So I would imagine actually getting hold of the hardware would leave it more exposed.
/me roll up his sleeves and say " excuse me while i load this script"
Strategies are different now. Your old "pro" hackers using their techniques wouldn't find squat on modern software using their traditional techniques. It was practical to faff with programs that fit into 16K of RAM manually. Unfortunately for your rose tinted specs, modern machines now have 1 million times that typically.

How old-school are you going? Script kiddies have been around for ages. Bearing in mind if you want to do anything remotely complex these days, off the shelf tools just won't work and you end up having to do a load of stuff manually anyway. I remember testing a program that proported to set up a wifi honeypot, degrade HTTPS and a couple of other things all with one command. Of course it didn't work and just tripped over its own feet in a faceplanting mess.
Amusingly, I've been trying to "prove" how terrible Windows defender is and how easy it is to hack. I downloaded a FUD RAT / backdoor generator from t'interweb and installed it on a Kali machine I wasn't too attached to - just getting it to install was a nightmare. I set up a windows 10 VM and set about generating a few "FUD" backdoors and so on. I spent hours trying to find one that got past Windows Defender IRL (as in not using online tools to test and it being downloaded via a website hosted on my Kali machine's webserver, so kinda real world conditions) and, the one that did wouldn't execute.
I've come to the conclusion that a lot of these tools are more hype than use. Sure, they may be excellent when they first come out but after a few months of submissions to Virus Total and so on, they become totally useless.
Y'all just need to watch some Johnny Lee Miller films and get yourself some mirror-shades. Then you can hack anything!
