Impressive drive it seems. I'm glad to see the SN550 gets a proper replacement after the revision of the drive had lowered performance.

Also, kudos to Hexus for running a sustained write test - loads of reviews skip this even though it's pretty important!

Most likely... Hexus just didn't get sampled for it? Plenty of reviews about for it though, if that's what you mean?

Re: WD Blue SN570 SSD (1TB)

1TB for £90. That's getting into real mass storage. It's actually, in enough cases to matter, faster than my PCI-e 4 MP600.

In an era of silly cost GPUs, it's amusing that the thing to tickle my pickle is a "budget" SSD.

I'm running SSDs reaching 10 years old now. They are still good enough but honestly, having 6 drives in my PC is getting a bit much. It'd be nice to retire the WD Raptor HDD.

My only concern is if adding an extra M2 drive would cause issues with PCI-e lanes to the existing drive.

Yup, we don't get sampled with them. Still understand your frustration. At this rate, we'll buy one to test and report back. It will be included before the next SSD review.

That would depend on your platform/motherboard. E.g. it's possible that lanes get shared between slots with multiple drives installed.

Or if both are run through the chipset rather than one being fed from CPU lanes, total bandwidth could be limited by the chipset link, however that's not typically a big problem as both can run at full speed independently, and should be able to copy between them fine too as PCIe/chipset links are full duplex anyway.

Check your motherboard manual, and/or platform/chipset block diagrams.

SIMPLY impressive for a DRAM less drive, probably the SLC portions of the mem helps alot. That WD Black is explosive. WD is back!

There's a chance the 2nd (or 3rd, etc) m.2 will share resources with SATA ports or the GPU lanes. I've never seen a board where the primary m.2 shares with anything else for a long time.

You definitely shouldn't be just relying on sampling as it has been consistently proven for nearly every manufacturer of SSDs to do a bait and switch between review and released model (near immediately in one or two cases iirc).

That and Samsung is one of the largest brands, hard to make a decision when its missed.

Re: WD Blue SN570 SSD (1TB)

Cheers both on the M2 question. I haven't looked into it, and I don't know if it's an issue at all. It's just something I remember seeing in a BIOS menu, possibly with my older board.

That said, I still remember when DRAM timings were measured in single digits.

£120 now @ scan, that's £40 more than the SN550, so, no thanks.

That's more than you can buy a WD Black SN750 for.

That would have been in interesting comparison, the old Black drive vs new Blue drive.

Re: WD Blue SN570 SSD (1TB)

I always thought the Black were better, especially if you're a power user? Few months back I got the WD_BLACK SN750, and it's still £109 on Amazon. I'm going to guess it's a higher price because it's the newer product...

Re: WD Blue SN570 SSD (1TB)

The SN750 Black is a higher-end drive, it's likely the early/placeholder pricing of the SN570 is just messed up. Amazon have the 1TB listed at around £88.

The WD Black SN750 is a drive with a higher performance controller and DRAM. The Blue line, SN550 and SN570, are lower-end DRAM-less drives.
